Unity 2018.2.3f1 Crashes a lot when entering playmode

    Recently upgraded from 2018.1 to 2018.2.3f1, and it just crashes so much. I've seen a random crash from time to time in the old version, but now it just crashes maybe once every 10 minutes.

    It's hard to file a bug report, since it's a big project, and I can't specify what steps leads up to the crash, it just seems to happen on entering playmode or on recompile of the code.

    Anyone else having this problem?

    Hmm, I've noticed it says "Importing small assets" sometimes when I save the scene, but no files have been changed. Don't know if it's related to this, but it seems like I see this before a crash. This is so annoying :( Anyone have any tips on how to debug this?

    Thanks, here's a huge dump from the editor log just when a crash happened. Is there anything in here that can help me narrow it down?

    I don't know if I have any native libraries..?

    Load scene 'Temp/__Backupscenes/0.backup' time: 3.005491 ms looks a little unfamiliar to me.

    I tried removing the Library folder and let it rebuild again, but it seems to get stuck, it took more than 30 minutes with no progress.

    So I removed the Plugins and Standard Assets folder, and am now trying to put what's in them one by one and let it import in Unity.

    Currently the import gets stuck when I put in PUN+ (Photon Unity Networking) and it's scripts/dlls. Just the folder "Photon Unity Networking" without the others seems to make it stuck. So I'm gonna try them one by one.. phew..

    The getting stucik issue might be related to that I moved the Photon folders into my own folder called Plugins. But I don't want it in my root, and I had it like this in the previous Unity version. Hmm.. Maybe I should ask on the Photon forums if they know about this.. :)

    Actually I started a new project and started moving everything in place, and leaving out some scripts/assets that I didn't actually use, and now it seems to work, at least it imports Photon as it should. And Photon is now in the plugins folder again, so that doesn't seem to be the issue. Maybe some weird cache or something that made it freak out. Hope this helps someone. :)

    Hmm, the import/library issues are gone, but I'm still crashing when entering playmode.

    thread_suspend failed it says, like before.

    How can we debug this? It's hard to recreate it, but I don't think my project has any special settings, except I'm using the incremental compiler, can that be the reason?

    Now it crashed while I was working in a particle system. This time the bug reporter showed up, which it didn't on the play mode crash. But I don't know how to reproduce it, since it seems to happen randomly.

    Now I'm suddenly back to the issue with "Importing assets" seemingly stuck at "importing scripts", and I can't work.

    I never had this many issues with the older version, so I'm considering going back, but I'll have to redo my project once again, since I guess I can't open a new project. Hmm, this is very sad and time consuming :(

    It might be related to the Incremental compiler, but I emailed photon support, and they seemed to know about it, but didn't have any solution for it so far. Sorry if I'm bumping the thread, just posting my findings here if anyone else has the same issues..

    I would, but I can’t recreate it by any exact steps, as it only happens from time to time randomly, even if it happens several times an hour. But since I disable the incremental compiler, it hasn’t happened yet.

    By posting here I’m hoping someone has something similar, but I’ll stop doing that if it usually never helps :)

    Do you use incremental compiler? Did you try 2.5? I'm still on 2.3, and it crashes from time to time, but not as often as when using the incremental compiler (which was very fast).

    I concur this behaviour. I've been using the incremental compiler too, and yeah - it will happen 10-20 mins, and I get similar looking stack traces to the people on this thread.

    I've been logging these crashes and I noticed something quite strange. Every time they happen to me the "Time Awake Since boot is always a multiple of 1000 seconds - without fail. My hunch is that the issue is periodic:

    I have 2018.2.6f1 now, and I haven't tried the incremental compiler again, however it still crashes a LOT randomly, today working on UI elements and changing shaders on objects. So I can't recreate the crash, it just happens a lot, which makes it hard to file a bug report.

    @LostInTheMachine: Interesting that it happens on exact 1000 intervals, I haven't seen that information in my logs.

    We have been experiencing this issue as well since we updated the project from Unity 5.6 to 2018. This has been occurring since the Beta and we are currently on 2018.2.8f.     There’s already 2018.2.8? Is it usual with this many updates as recently?

    I started a new project using the LWRP VR template, and I still got random crashes, sometimes when changing materials/shaders, sometimes when entering playmode.

    However the playmode crash seems to happen when using Incremental compiler, but since I save and play maybe 20-30 times before it crashes, it still saves time.

    However from time to time I have to delete the lockfile to be able to open Unity, and very often I have to relogin to my account which is quite annoying.

    It’s hard to file a report on random crashes :(

    We are seeing this same crash in Unity 2017.4.9f1, on macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. Very often, perhaps every ~5 compiles or so, the editor will crash on play. Also, I get the popup asking me to report this crash but the "report" button just closes the popup and doesn't bring up the bug reporting tool.

    Are you using the incremental compiler? It seems to only happen for me when that's enabled.

    No, we are using Unity 2017 and we don't use the incremental compiler.
