    Hi,

Does anyone from Unity happen to know approximately when Unity 2018.1 will be formally released?

    Thanks so much!

Unity 2018.1 has only just become somewhat usable since b10 imo.. still I don't think it will be in beta for that many more weeks now.

So maybe like end of this month rc? and sometime next month final release .. that's my guess anyway..

When they started the 2018.1 beta cycle, it was expected to end March 4th 2018, as stated in this blog post.
Perhaps they save the release for the upcoming GDC.

I think there are too many open issues for a full release in 4 days.

They've already said that ECS will arrive as separate thing, so expect to see it in github or package manager instead of part of specific Unity beta.

Also, I think latest word on Burst has been that it would arrive with 2018.2 (they've been really specific that it will NOT come with 2018.1 in any form) so it's technically possible that we just start getting 2018.2 betas around GDC.

That didn't stop UT in the past to release the "final version". It's pretty much the same with every release though.
From my point of view, the release flow seems to be like...
    1. Beta build breaks various obvious/essential things
    2. Release date comes closer, people start to point out this version should not be released
    3. UT releases "broken build as final release"
    4. Forum gets flooded with messages that new version does not work, people are unhappy and can't believe why UT released such unstable version
    5. UT releases various patches and minor version updates over the next months
    6. Unity gets more usable again, forum issues seem to stabilize
    7. Everybody forgets that new Unity release normally contain many issues

It'll be done when Biz dev tells us it's done / Marketing wants it done / the project manager flips out and starts singing showtunes it's done.

2018.1 will not be released at GDC. There's going to be at least one more beta after b11 before we switch to RC.

We're working hard to break that pattern. Expect some related announcements during GDC.

Yeah, Package Manager allows a lot more bits and pieces to be deployed independently, so the stability of Unity ends up being the user's choice, right?

To a certain degree yes, that's one of the considerations behind that transition, although modularity comes with its own problem spaces and challenges. There will be a blog post about packman in the following weeks going into the details.

So instead of "new release now!" it'll be "in the current beta now, RC soonish!"? That does sound better than the old way.

It's good news that UT recognize it as non-ideal situation, much appreciated! Looking forward to what you guys reveal during GDC. It seems you have lots of good stuff to show this year! :)

Am I right to think that one bit from the 2018.1 beta 11 release notes offers a clue about this?

Wait, what? So when will ECS come? I think there was a promise since B2 "ECS will be released soon/next beta - it's nearly done". And now beta is switching to RC?

Pretty sure the quote about the ECS being made available during GDC means just that. It's going to be in a beta release next week.

There's now an Entity Component System and C# Job system sub forum inside the forum Betas & Experimental Features. So this is a matter of days.

    https://forum.unity.com/forums/entity-component-system-and-c-job-system.147/

    Which contains just one post:

    https://forum.unity.com/threads/samples-and-builds.522209/#post-3427542

The bad news is that maybe we'll have to wait until 3/23/2018, the day for the Data-Oriented design sessions. The good news is that all of the Job System/ECS related sessions will be livestreamed. :)

Let's not speculate on release dates. The purpose of the beta forums is to provide feedback which will shorten the development times and get it to you as soon as possible.
