Today we are extremely happy to announce the release of Unity 2.5. For the first time Unity development is now available for use on both Mac OS X and Windows! True cross-platform development with Unity has now been realized. This has been an enormous project that has taken well over a year to complete, it's a release that we're very proud of having accomplished. What's more is that during this effort we've also nearly doubled in size as a company and so there is a lot more on the way, it's going to be an exciting year!

    Windows Editor Support
Unity 2.5 adds full support for Windows Vista and XP with full feature parity and interoperability with Mac OS X. The Unity editor has been rebuilt to look, feel and function identically on both operating systems, each running the same underlying engine. The best part? Unity on either platform can build games for either platform!

    Tabbed Interface
We took cues from the best designed applications, and the rewritten editor has received dozens of improvements. The most visible change is the tabbed interface, where every part of the interface can be moved, undocked to a secondary monitor, and even stacked to achieve logical grouping.

    Completely Customizable Editor
UnityGUI, Unity's own GUI creation system, now powers the entire editor and allows you to integrate your own unique level design tools, AI control tools, debugging tools, difficulty tuning tools, or anything else you need to optimize your workflows. Over 130 new API entry points enable you to create specialized, customized editor tools and build them into the existing Editor interface.

    And more!
Of course there's more, but instead of sharing it all here I'd like to suggest that you take a look at the following URL on our website for more information:

    http://unity3d.com/unity/whats-new/unity-2.5

Of course if you're just itching to download the new build then go for it!

    Windows: http://unity3d.com/unity/UnitySetup.exe

    Ready? Set? GO! :D

Finally, its been a painful wait but I am hoping it was worth it. Now I have to wait again until I get out of work to try it.

You guys are EARLIER with the release than your GDC estimate. This is very, very cool.

    Congratulations! :D

Props to the Unity team! So far it looks PFG. (Pretty "Darn" Great...)

Q: Is there any need to upgrade the AssetServer?

    Cheers,

Does that mean the next iPhone version will be using the new interface?

Not necessarily, let's worry about the next release we might do later, m'kay? I just want a few minutes of untainted joy before worry about what's next. :D

Great to hear that it's out though! Hopefully with some mass testing we'll iron out any bugs that might appear.

edit: and I'm not going to say I told you so, but I checked my e-mail and didn't get any announcement yet. 8)

Yea, I think you guys diffidently deserve to sat back and enjoy a very big release for at least a little bit before worrying about any upcoming releases of any of your other products.

Of course. But if you've used a 2.x trial already then you won't get a fresh start with this, write us at sales@unity3d.com and we can set you up (unless you've had multiple trials in which case it's time to buy anyway!).

Yep, the trial and full version are the same file... the only difference is the activation license.

Well if it helps speed up the process by a nanosecond, you can take my e-mail off the list. :p Congrats on the release Unity team!

Yeah, but usually in "developer speak", "around" means AFTER not BEFORE. :D

It's very cool to see an exception to that. 8)

Yes. Our licenses are not tied to a particular platform. Each license is meant for use by a single person, but that person can install on two machines. It's up to you to decide how to use those, 2 Mac, 2 Win or 1 of each.

    Uhm...

Does this mean that Indie can now build for not only Windows, but iPhone, and Wii as well? If not, you should change that bit to be less confusing.
