whuile this not much of a report but, I just left the mingle event. Still quite a few people there but I am jet lagged.

I can tell you that Jonathan Czeck's talk was packed, and I rode Tokyo rush hour trains for year, s I know about crowded. I tried to watch it but when I opened the door two people were standing in front of me, with just enough room to let the door open. I though I would stand behind the door but when I looked ther was already one person standing behind the door that I was squishing when I opened the door.

Other talk was interesting though and 2nd issue of unity dev mag just arrived so I am gong to read that now. for those subscribers not here I heard your copies have already been mailed out.

Eek! On his blog he writes "Next UnityEditor will run on Windows, and its rewritten in C# (it originated on MacOS, and is now moving to Windows)." Moving to Windows? Does anyone know if he is talking about moving away from MacOS or just multiple platform support? Maybe I don't read it quite right, but it sounds scary.

No, I read that part. I was asking about how they plan to implement it, if it's an application deploy or "wine like" or if it will run only in firefox.. things like that.

the roadmap is implicit in the blog (unless he omitted something); the wishlist is unknown....can't wait to see the vids :D

Unity for windows that use C# is basically what i was waiting for ^_^ maybe i can throw away torque and XNA :)

Regarding the wish list, my understanding from Nicholas and Tom's comments in the session and in the forum, the wish list session is to remain private, so I won't comment on it at all.

Unity 2.5 was demonstrated at the keynote running on Windows, and it looked great! You can rest assured, by the way they are talking about it at every session, that shipping Unity 2.5 (for both Mac and Windows) is high on the priority list.

Don't read that to mean it will be soon, just that they seem focused on it.

I think that Tom was talking about the fact that these videos will not be published on the site, to respect who went to the event; I do not think that they want to keep the whishlist for themselves; otherwise would go against the market rules...you wanna show what will be added, not keeping it secret :)

And from what you said seems that Unity on Windows was pretty good....yum yum :D (hoping that is not another extra to pay lol)

As I understood it (and I was in the room) it was pretty clear: Nothing leaves this room. Period.

So I would not expect anything from that session to be discussed publicly in video, photo or forum postings

well, good for you...keepr of the secrets LOL

i will try to sleep tonight :)

Your tone sounds like when Intel was about to announce the new dual core processor, trying to not give away any info :) There was a guy in our HW department that was invited at the conference and he said that he can't say anything (he didn't signed or agreed to any NDA, was about a week before the announcement), and the fun thing was that he was so concerned to continue to troll around saying that he knew stuff that was not supposed to reveal, that after 2 days everyone in the office knew, and he was not aware of that LOL was hilarious ;)

Just to say that if someone told you to not say anything, i exclude that anyone that was not there will be so "not-smart" to ask you (or any other one present at that session) about info.

incredible to see how a simple question can raise the temperature, when is enough to say "sorry, your info are not correct, since this is a topic that cannot be mentioned" ;)

next time i pay drinks for everyone (only 1 each person, i am poor lol) at the 09 meeting, chamomile probably LOL ;)

    2) escaped...or let it go? (shhhh Sam! - Sorry Master Frodo!)

3)who said that he left the room? he can write on the forum from there, right Thomas? :D

too much wine tonight maybe :p

The only reason I can see to keep that info secret is to not give away to the competition, however, there should have been users from Torque's (or whatever) community there, so the info will still come out to them either way.

The first rule of Unity Club is,
you do not talk about Unite club.

The second rule of Unity Club is,
you DO NOT talk about Unite club!

(I think they deserve whatever perks they get for attending, and whatever info will come out in due time, no big deal.)

Like it or not, control of information often allows a company to build hype at the best time: right before selling.

Must be some of you haven't been around the Apple marketing machine much. ;)

There are pros and cons, but one of the chief pros is protecting unique features so that they still feel new when the release comes. Announce a new feature early and another company puts two guys on it and makes an announcement soon after. Then, when you release... it's all old news and doesn't seem like an important distinguishing feature (even if the competition is months away from shipping anything comparable.)

Obviously, the unfortunate part is that it means it's difficult for the customer to plan around your product schedule.

It's especially nice for software companies to keep things secret because over-promising is a programmer disease and underestimating the time it takes to implement a feature correctly is a programmer epidemic. :D

I didn't mean for my earlier post to be interpreted that they were keeping a secret list, or that attendees now have secret knowledge of what is coming in the next version (we don't).

The road map/wish list session was really just a big brainstorming discussion (which was neat to participate in). There were questions and an interactive discussion from both the Unity team and the attendees. It was the kind of thing that works well in person but just doesn't fit the format of a forum well - one of the reasons to keep the discussion in the room.

Overall, Unite 2008 was a terrific conference. I was comfortable with my knowledge of Unity before but I am surprised by how many useful things I learned about by being here in person... not to mention meeting so many great folks from Unity and the community.

    Thanks again Unity team!

With all the respect, the order of magnitude is impossible even to put on paper :)

If tomorrow i announce my new game sayng that many things are secret to build hype....they laugh at me LOL and of course Unity count more than me, but we are light years in difference between an announcement of a multi millionaire company and this company (nothing wrong or offensive....apple started in a garage; like HP; what Unity did in the few years since when it started is amazing)

as we know the bigger competitor for Unity is Torque, so i would say that the decision to go to Windows (avoiding to pay 1500 dollars for the pro to publish on it) is good, and will bring more customers that loves their OS, no matter if it has flaws or not.

Considering that the 2 engines/whatever you wanna call them (tm) are pretty close in features...sorta of better maya, c4d or 3dsmax kinda of thing...this is the chance for Unity to crush the opposition; not keeping secret a brainstorming session, especially when we have a section in this forum where the developers answered to our requests for a feature or a peripherals.

Not revealing info is basically a good way to build hype, but let's remember that these products (torque, Unity, A6) are still in a niche that do not take any advantage compared to revealing or not the next features (again, with all the respect for this company and who work in or with it).

Just my 0.2 c; i do not have a degree in marketing, but i work with people that takes decisions on new products, so i have a little bit of an idea of how it works :) so what i say came up from my ideas and from what i've seen in my career...could be right or wrong doesn't really matter....the point is to let people to think with their head instead of getting in a passive way the informations as they are feed to us ;)

So, the awards have passed and I have no idea who won, what where the finalists, etc. I also don't see anyone asking about this, so am I the only one that missed this info? when can we expect to know?

keep watching the main site pages, they should add the vids soon there (as per Bob message posted few posts above).

I am sure that the sessions will be as interesting as the one of the last year!

and i was thinking something like that....could be an idea maybe:

posting the entire session on itunes, paying for getting it...so you can publish the session vids in good resolution (including slides maybe) and we can buy them like we do with other shows or vids :)

I am sure that i am not the only one that would spend 20 dollars or more to get the sessions and the slides (since the tutorials around are pretty few, that would be a good move to get some money from who was not able to see the show in person)

I launched the stone in the lake.... maybe someone will like the idea :D

OT: is mortifying when someone launch one of your idea....saw the commercial for wii instruments; they were faster than me lol

The Road Map Wish List session is seen as a benefit for attendees only and we asked very specifically for folks to not discuss that material here on the forums or anywhere publicly. If you want to be privy to that sort of information then you need to be there to participate in the discussion yourself. :)

Sorry but I haven't dug through all the latest posts as I'm finally coming up for air after all the email follow-up and sleeping that were required after last week. I'm now back in SF and feeling somewhat normal again. :p

The session videos will be posted over the coming weeks, do not expect them in the next few days as I'm sitting here next to a stack of tapes that haven't even gone off for editing. Be patient, they'll be made available over time so everyone can benefit from the information.

Video status is that they're mostly done and in the hands of the editor. Presentation materials can now be incorporated for extra detail and we'll get them up as soon as we can.

I won't offer any time estimates as it's just gonna be that much more rope to hang me with... :p

Thanks for your patience and sorry about the delays.

Is the ability to watch the Unite 2008 videos going to be included in Unity 2.5, or will that require the 3.x upgrade?

Should we let them in on the joke yet?

When everyone showed up at Unite, we all just went straight to the bar... there are no videos because there was no conference. Just a lot of drinking.

It was mentioned on IRC that the videos received an 'R' rating from the MPAA. Unity is busy editing out the suggestive and inappropriate content, hoping to resubmit their material to the rating agency sometime late this spring.

I knew it! Unite 2008 wasn't really a developer conference ; it was a big RAVE in the planetarium with laser light show and crazy shenanigans. 8)
