TextMesh Pro Unicode not working in text added at runtime

    I (and another user here) am using the Dialogue System for Unity with TextMesh Pro, and when text with Unicode characters is added to TextMeshPro - Text (UI) elements during runtime, rather than the symbol represented by the Unicode, the actual escaped Unicode appears. So, for example, the text would say "u\2640" instead of displaying the male symbol. Is there a workaround or fix to get around this problem?
