    Hey Everyone,

I've just started to learn Unity after years of working with GameMaker but I've hit a bump in the road a little earlier than expected!

Whenever I create a new asset it is automatically given the name New Material/Object etc. and I'm unable to rename it. I've tried everything that I've seen people mention in similar threads, doing the delayed left-double-click, pressing F2, hitting enter. The only way I've found that I can rename anything is by renaming the files themselves in the OS, which seems like it's definitely not the right way to be doing it!

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm running v5.6.2 off of a clean install.

    Cheers!

when you rename stuff sometimes you have to hit enter/return then it saves. If you type then simply click else where it doesn't save the new text. Maybe this will help? Also if it's a prefab. I found just yesterday maybe. I had to make a new prefab with the new name instead of just renaming the prefab. I might be wrong with that though haha. With practice you'll get hang of Unity I feel. I've still some way to go myself.

    Hey, thanks for replying.

I'm not even getting to point of being able to edit the name at all, let alone getting it to save it haha. I understand normally you'd double click on the name and then get the textbox up and be able to enter a new name, but I'm struggling to get to that point!

left click once on the name and then click again not to quick but enough for the item to know your double clicking on it, I tried this on a material and it lets me change the name from clicking left mouse button on it twice.

Check some unity vids out also and try find a moment where someone changes the name of something. You'll be able to work it out this way to. I'm sorry your having difficulty doing this. It shouldn't be to much of an issue to get around. Best of luck.

    Hi all!

This renaming thing seems like a bug in unity Editor.
I have the same issue and it works only for a while after restarting the editor.
Then I'm back to square one.
I have done this 100s of times and the same result is back at me.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!!!

Hi, I have the same problem here, I can't rename anything from the editor at all...right click and then click on rename and nothing happens....clicking the file also do nothing...I'm reporting this to Unity but I think this won't be resolved in the right away...so the only thing here is to rename it through searching the file in your computer

Encountered the same issue. The simple fix was to restart unity.

Just encountered this issue, seems like editing anything in the project is disabled. I wonder if there's some kind of "project lock" feature that is being enabled unknowingly.

    Same, using 2020.3.24f1 URP
There is a split second where the object can be renamed before the editor locks me out. Restarted five or six times to no avail. Needless to say I'm dead in the water if everything in my hierarchy is GameObject (1)

Are you using source control which may have the file locked / read-only?

I haven't had this issue in a long while, but I do recall it at some point in the distant past.

Unfortunately, no idea (other than the above mentioned) what the issue was for me at the time...

Was working on GameDev.tv's unity tutorial, at the point where we add lighting to the gatehouses for ambiance.

    Leading up to issue:

-create Empty in Heirarchy, named 'Lighting'
-put innate DirectionalLight item under Lighting
    -create child PlayerGateHouse under Lighting
-rightclick PlayerGateHouse in Heirarchy, Select Spotlight
**The light item popped up in the heirarchy and editor, able to change settings in inspector, but the light visuals never rendered
-rightclick PlayerGateHouse in Heirarchy, Select Point Light
**The light item popped up in the heirarchy and editor, able to change settings in inspector, but the light visuals never rendered
-Select PlayerGateHouse in Heirarchy, Ctrl+D for duplicate
-Observe the lights for the duplicate render, while the original do not.
-Attempt to rename duplicate from within Heirarchy via SlowDoubleClick and rightclick>rename, but as soon as any key is pressed the highlighted name displays normally as if the user had clicked away from the highlighted name
**I personally will get the highlighted name being replaced the letter of the key I press, splitsecond later, then the item name returns to its original name unhighlighted

    What I've tried:
    Restart Application > same issue

    Additional Observation:
-I can change the name of the item from the top of the inspector
-I was never able to get the original spot and point lights rendering, but duplicating those items for the original PlayerGateHouse parent was my workaround

    Workaround for now?

Having this issue now, seemingly out of nowhere. Restarting pc or Unity does nothing. Very frustrating.

I had to restart Visual Studio and Unity in order for the name changes to be accepted. Visual Studio was not recognizing the existence of renamed public classes until I quit and restarted, and this seemed to clear up the problems Unity was having as well.

Quit the language input program worked for me. Otherwise you have to click somewhere else to commit rename instead of hit enter key.
    Hope those help!

Not sure if this helps anyone but I just had this same issue where I was trying to rename some objects in my scene and nothing was happening. For me, I was trying to rename my objects whilst having Debug mode enabled o_O so as soon as I switched back to Normal mode, I could rename my objects again.

Same happened to me. But I was updating a gameobjects name in update method of a class which has [ExecuteAlways] attribute. Even though the script was on another object, I couldn't rename any gameobject. After canceling renaming, problem solved for me.
