UE has released another art package for free:

As a Coder, I prefer to work in Unity, but in all my projects I hit the artwork border at some point. It is not possible to get a project to the point where you can actually get some funding without an art team. It is hard to get Unity to not look too ugly, but thats ok, I can afford the time to do so.
But it is impossible to get art that does not look plain dead ugly in Asset Store or elsewhere. Every project I do looks like 1999 no matter what. I can program anything I need by my own, but there is no way to find art for 3D, even if you want to spend some bucks.

For funding you need at least something that does not look like 1999. Impossible.

My latest project is a Dungeon Keeper like game. I can build maps in Tiled, Imps can do pretty much anything they could do in DK, I was able to bend Unity Navigation to my will and all. But there is no way I can bring this project to a point where people would spend money, just because it looks plain dead ugly.

Seems Unity is only good for flappy bird or teams already funded.
Man, if there was just some reasonable art available. Please don't send me links of free art because that is not what I need. Quality is just too bad for anything commercial.

The problem is, without art direction the best assets in the world will produce 1999 graphics.

Free art is only for those projects that want to look like the thousands of other projects using the same free art.

Not really, you dont have to use every single asset from the free pack, if you want a tree, who cares if the tree looks like every other tree. If you're making a character I get that can be unique.

But a tree, house, plane, npc, mountain, stone, table , gun, bottle , dog, etc , etc, etc, who cares if it looks the same. If i see a dog in one game chances are im not going to recognize the same dog in another game

I would guess if someone is complaining about the lack of free art assets is making their game look like 1999, the art assets they are referring to aren't the trees.

    It's not about free assets.
It's about assets that don't look like some 20 years ago. I spent several 100 Eur for art from the Asset Store and I've no issue with paying. But it all looks S***ty. There is (almost) no modern artwork around. Most packages are from 2012 or so and look like 1999. It does not look professional. It looks cheap with very few exceptions.
Have a look at the stuff Epic released. Here's a lets play from the game they released the assets from:

Then have a look at the Asset Store and compare. Believe me, I tried hard to get good stuff... it's not there.

If you think all the stuff you buy from the AS looks like 1999, you either buy the wrong assets or have never seen a 1999 game.

Put it in a scene and make a video. Then I can tell you.

If you do not like the stuff on the store or think it does not fit your game, don't buy it... Look somewhere else. If you want a good looking game you will either have to make it or get an artist to make you some.

Especially if your goal is to make a game that people want to invest money in to, you will have to make a sacrifice somewhere.

Friendly reminder that nothing is stopping you from buying and using UE assets for Unity.

Epic allows you to use all Marketplace assets anywhere, the only exception are their own free releases.
