I'm looking at moving from Mac to Linux in a month or two, pending some testing and research. I'm a full-time Linux pro, so Linux itself isn't in question -- it's support of my needed tooling that I need to verify.

I'm wondering if, as is often the case, the .deb packages for Unity that are nominally "Ubuntu" will also install on modern versions of Debian. I can run Ubuntu if I must, but I really prefer Debian. I'm okay with either Stable or Testing versions of Debian for a workstation (I stick with Stable on servers unless I have a really good reason not to do so).

Unity team: Please consider supporting Debian in general and not just Ubuntu.

The deb package should be ok on debian, provided that you can fulfill the dependencies. (There's nothing special nor ubuntu-specific in there, as far as I know.)

Has there been any discussion about moving from deb to snap? I know Unity is only supporting Ubuntu, but it would at least allow more distro flexibility than a deb package should someone want to try it.

I'm on Mint so it doesn't affect me, just curious

By chance, I attended a presentation on Snappy tonight. My impression was that Snappy is a pretty fast-evolving toolset right now. It looks interesting, but it may be a little early for Unity to move that way.

In the future, we'll probably move to a "bootstrap installer" binary like the other platforms.

I have Debian. With 5.1 I had to install mono from here http://www.mono-project.com/docs/getting-started/install/linux/#debian-ubuntu-and-derivatives and it all worked. I have all the repos in my /etc/apt/sources.list, so maybe that helped, i can't tell.
Also now with 5.5.0b I moved the installation to another HDD and chromium-sandbox had a setuid problem, maybe due to the different mount options (I have no 'nosuid'). To get it to work I 'ln -s' the one from google chrome-unstable.

My wife has a new high-performance Linux laptop on order, and she's kindly given me permission to use it as a test machine for my Unity tooling before she puts it into daily use. :)
