Is it possible to control two animations on the same mesh, but operating on different bones? For example, if we could control the left hand and right hand separately? Or should this always be done by splitting the mesh into parts?

I'm coming from a background of games with just 2D sprite-based animation, and I'm working with a 3D animator with a background of animating movies, not games, so I'm still getting used to what is and isn't possible with Mecanim and blend trees and such.
