I've looked everywhere and done everything I could think of, but I'm still unable to make a 2D sprite's white background transparent.

Either transparency in sprites absolutely hate me or I just can't do anything right...

Please, I need help with this. This has been frustrating me for a while now.

What you could do is deleting the parts that need to be transparent, in Photoshop (for example having your sprite on a separate PS layer, and having no background), and then export it as PNG with default settings.

I second Gnur's statement about just removing the white part of the image altogether. I just wanted to add that instead of using Photoshop, http://www.getpaint.net/download.html is free and supports transparency as well.

Yeah. What they both said is true.
And you could use Gimp to do the same transparency thing too.
