    If you look at the Bit Trip Runner very closely, when he jumps you'll see the rainbow distorts as he moves up and down. Basically, their trail emitter is staying vertical. It never rotates based on the character's velocity. So to achieve that, you'll need the same. Keep the emitter rotation fixed.

    But how can I keep the emitter rotation fixed?

    Hmm, good point. I thought you could just attach it to a GameObject that remains vertical (it could follow your character around), but I the emitter will still rotate based on velocity.

    I've not really used the trail renderer to be honest, but their should be a way hopefully.
