    Hi,
    [edit 28.02.2013]

    new Homepage: http://tractor-app.tumblr.com

I'm creating a Tractor game for kids. As my son likes tractors and playing on iPad - this was just a "must have done" thing for me.

In the barn you can change your current trailer. You have to cut gras to get hay. With the hay baler you can pickup the cut gras and make hay bales. With another trailer you can pick up the bales and bring it to the cows. They'll like it!

Images were taken on an iPad

    Thank you!

Now you can chase some ducks. But they wont be happy. They'll run away and do some QUACK QUACK!

Looks good. BUT I would change the floor texture, to blurry and stretched.
I will show the picture to my son, this evening, let's see what he will comment :D

Looks cute and promising! If you're targeting kids I would fix some things. The colors are too muted and muddy. The little hearts kind of look like what the saturation levels should look like for all of the textures. Kids LOVE bright colors, it instantly attracts them to imagery. Secondly, and this is my nitpick. I don't see enough contrast between the animals, tractor and the ground. It needs simple blob shadows under the animals and tractor. This will help them look more grounded as well, right now they look kind of floaty. That's my two cents, looking to see some more images! It's a great start by the way, and a great idea.

EDIT: yes I agree that the texture scale on the ground is too huge. It makes it look blurry and muddied.

Hell yeah, he is right ;)
(maybe something not soo "real", like this:

? I would try something more cartoon style)

Thank you both for the ideas!

I tried your ideas and here is the result.

    added projectors
changed the ground color to something more cartoonish.

the only problem I see is that a single texture with high quality cound be too large for mobile platforms...

    Much much better! ;)

For the texture size: it depends, what do you mean "too large"? I'm using 5-7 texture 1024x1024 on my game and it runs smoothly, also on iPad 1 and some old Samsung devices...
    Just an image:

Tiles, different levels of backgrounds, front tiles, a lot of suff..
The compression (PowerVR etc) makes a lot of difference...

You can cover a very large area with a 256x256 texture and it would look beautiful. The trick is tiling the texture either by scaling UVs in your 3d app or by the little tiling inputs next to the texture attributes in Unity. It's look way better now, very much like a kid's game. Keep going, you're making great progress!

Okeys i think I got it with the UV and texture mapping.

Got my Wacom today and handpainted some textures.

Oh, and I made the level less flat ;-)

Much better. I would reduce the tractor details and make it more deformed.. nice job! ;)

@Floddi - Wow the handpainted textures really suit this project! I love the improvements. Little technical note: I'm seeing seams around the grass on top, where it is meeting the texture on the sides. You'll just need to pull the UVs back from that edge of the texture to remove that seam! Good work and keep updating. I like where this is going.

Some test with tiles, if it fits, i will make handpainted version of the tiles in higher resolution. But for now, just a try

Oh... The Project is not dead!

But after some test with kids in the age, the new level has proven to be a fail. Kids have no good orientation and failed to find the Farm again or were confused where to go. So... littlekidsgame != openworldgame.

The game has now a title screen and finally a name

As mentioned, I tried some tileset based design for the ground texture. I repainted the needed tiles by hand... not 100% happy with the result - but i think its a good start!?

My kids would be happy to help test. The eldest is nearly 5, loves tractors and currently plays "Bus driver" obsessively.

I'll be ready for some betatests / feedback at middle of next week.

If you're really interessted in betatesting, please provide some information on:
    - do you have kids in the target audience age (3-7 years)
    - do you have an iOS device and which (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) and wich generation

The second step will be to send me an pm with your iOS UDID
how to find out: How to Obtain the Identifier Number
