Tips on Beautifying 2D Maps?

    I am creating a sandbox game similar to that of Terraria or Starbound. I am looking for some ways to beautify the scenery and am looking for some suggestions from you all out there. One way is obviously particles. I also use a procedurally generated day/night/weather system for my background in addition to some other planned background scenery. Anybody have other ways they can recommend such as camera tricks, filters, store assets, etc?

    Just looking for general tips, doesn't have to be game specific. I can think of many for a 3D game, but am having trouble thinking of any for a 2D one. So just curious what people have discovered and found useful in the 2D game world. Might even give me some ideas of my own for my current project.
