timeline and render to texture storyboard cross fading

so for the past 3 days I've tried to get cross fading with a sub scene working
some times it works, some times the clip shows particles and other times it doesn't

so here is the setup, maybe someone knows the internals enough to guide me (it looks like a bug in the special case for control tracks and particles)
