Timeline: Adding an override track messes with character root

Hi - hope someone can help here - I bring a character into Timeline, add an animation track for the skeleton, then link to an animation clip for that. So far so good. The problem starts when I create an override track (say I want to change position of one of the arms). When the override track is converted into a clip the transformations and rotations of the character's root are zeroed out, resulting in my character being put through the ground for the duration of the override clip (pic attached). What's the reason for this / how can I fix this?

    Using Unity 2019.1.5f1
