the thing in the scene view that shows how much area you can see in the game view has vanished

    The camera thing that shows what the game sees vanished.

    You mean the Camera outline? Select the Gizmos button. There's a drop-down that lets you select each one so the Camera will have two options; to control the camera icon and to control its outline (view).

    If you're not talking about this then I would highly suggest you spend some time figuring out the names of things in Unity you're referring to. A screenshot would help a lot. The magical drama above isn't really helping us solve your issue. :)
