For quite a while you've seen me and some of the other staff talk about some new forum software or something, well it's real, and while not yet finished I want to show you what it's sort of going to look like (we still have some styling issues to deal with)

We're currently running on a heavily customised version of VBulletin, which is kinda buggy, lets spam through A LOT, we can't upgrade it without everything breaking, I can't make changes without it breaking, the web developers hate working with it.....the list goes on.

Flashback to some point last year, myself and some of the web developers evaluated a tonne of software, some good, some bad, some meh. We finally chose XenForo which was the favourite for both me and the devs for it's flexibility and just generally awesomeness of being able to do things like, put restrictions on how many posts you can have before you're allowed to post in Collaboration without moderation (remember that discussion, I didn't forget).

Anyhoot, this thing has been in development for some time now and it's got the point where I'm allowed to try and intentionally break it, so why not take some sneaky screenshots and show you (because the internet will hate it anyway)

Our goal was to not really change the design all that much, but it is different and it feels different in a good way, like the good kind of tingle.

Please remember that the styling is not finished and we still have some things to fix, so if things look a little wonky, that's why.
There's no official launch but we're close, when it gets super close I will try and give a warning that the forums will go into maintenance mode for a while.

Looks neat, I like the message previews and what looks like the ability to `like` and `follow`.

    Neat!
Are we going to get thread rating too? That would help out filter out the junk in wip.

Yeah... I don't even use forum's search engines, they never find what I want. But using google works so well. I think it's probably why most forums don't focus on improving their own search engines.

You can "like" a thread or post but it doesn't change the order of view. Part of the reason we wanted to change software is so we could install plugins without everything going crazy and breaking, so if you demand a feature change/addition it's more likely to happen.

You've always had the ability to "follow" but it doesn't really do anything on here (may be hidden now).

Our main search box at the top was fixed a while ago and now runs on google.

For me personally only the spammers was a real usability problem. I always loved and cherished the professional and non-cluttered feel that the forums transferred from the actual product it was promoting.

i'm wondering what (visual) consequence does "liking a thread" have ?

Because for me personally the super straight to the point design of the unity forums were a quite huge part for me enjoying it.
To me all these social/gamification forum features of following and likes are complete and useless bogus.
Makes me quite sad to see something like that included in here. I can already see all the "*liked*" posts incoming.
That profile preview picture with "trophy points" and "warning points" and "Likes you've received" makes me sad panda also.

I feel old and grumpy :/

No visual consequence other than "You 12 others like this" at the end of the post.

As for the trophies, we tried to de-activate those, but they are tied in pretty deep so removing them was a no, so everyone gets 10 points YEY and then never again.

I quite like the idea of the likes and warnings because i don't see that as a social networking thing i see it as a good check on how credible someone is. Kinda sneaky but possibly useful for evaluating asset store product authors

I disagree. It's not always well implemented, but when it is, it's actually incredibly useful. Facebook, for example, is pointless in its "Likes". However, take reddit, for example. Its comment upvote/downvote sorting makes the comment section more useful than the linked article half the time. In 90% of cases I go first to reddit comments and see what the top-rated comment is, and the top-rated comment usually takes note of whatever the headline either overlooks or is trying to mislead about. It's a huge time saver - headline plus top comment lets me know with a high degree of accuracy whether the link is worth my time.

I'm not saying that the new forum software will implement this in as effective a way, but damn, I'd love it if it could.

I don't visit or use reddit, it's too complicated for me :)
But yeh, that's why I said "for me". Numerous others have voiced their enjoyment of a like system like that in here, in the past, before.
I just like to read without getting distracted :)

Have you never watch Spiderman or read the comics? I thought Stan Lee was big in all of Europe not just Germany.

Anyway, I'll be glad to see the spam posts gone. Bizarre that spam evolved from a SEO tactic to something trolls use to annoy.

I'll be glad if I can turn on swear word filters and image filters. Which would mean the SW would have to allow the uploader to rate image content as sexual, nude, violent, gory, well those 4 mostly or maybe the forum SW will have Google 'Safe Filter' type technology. Yes, I'm grown up and that's why I like grown up choices.

Search was much better in 1999 then the current forum's search which is something like running grep through an ls -ltR.

Was hoping it was going to http://www.discourse.org/ Pretty slick one by Jeff Atwood who made stackoverflow initially. It hasn't been out a ton of time and is made in Rails/Ruby but some nice features while keeping the old school forum love. Maybe they will make a Node.js one or other platforms.

I don't know about the others but most of the time the only time I will "like" a post is to give acknowledge when someone replies to one my posts without actually having to reply back to them, I have a weird affinity for treating a forum like an IM and thus feel the urge to reply back otherwise I'll feel like I'm being an a-hole.

    ...must resist urge.

Give me an extra trophy and I'll send you a box of choc chip cookies.

    Does this include replies ;)?

It's mobile ready, so just fine, screenshots below.

Of course, all your posts and private messages. You may need to reconfigure some of your settings when we make the switch but that's about it, everything else is the same.

Will we be able to turn off the mobile display and use the full site if we want to? I much prefer to to not have to have the crippled experience on my tablets or phones.

I don't see the option to do that, but all the functionality is the same as the standard forums, it just fits on the screen so you don't have to zoom in, zoom out and fiddle around.

    Unity Forums...powered by Enlighten. :p

I want to legit investigate this possibility

Having been through this before... People will get a lot of likes for posts that are funny or that pander to popular opinion in Gossip, for one thing; and for another, if I get a lot of likes for answers I give in the Scripting forum, it doesn't necessarily mean I have any clue what I'm talking about while I answer posts in the Networking forum.

Sorry, I've heard that before many times and it's never true. Mobile responsive sites just suck, plain and simple, they're always dumbed down and actually less useable (and typically more full of showy crap that makes them sluggish and terrible scroll regions) than the normal site on mobile devices. Please please please have the devs add the option to not use a responsive version.
