The first thing that immediately stood out to me about Unity is the fact that it's named Unity, and it's icon is a cube rotated to an angle that would make it appear as a hexagon, if it were orthographic, but is instead in perspective.

The reason this stood out to me is because the cube from that angle, meaning, the cube when rotated to look like a hexagon in an orthographic view, is actually the symbol of unification in many ancient spiritual belief systems, and many sort of new age metaphysical thought systems.

I was just curious, was this done on purpose? or pure coincidence?

Some examples of what I mean by this, in hinduism the Hexagram represents the unification of the cosmic dualities, and ultimately purusa, the ultimate being transcended beyond all duality and in complete unity with the cosmos.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shatkona

If your familiar with Nassim Haramein and the resonance project http://www.theresonanceproject.org/ Youll have to read a bit into it to see what I'm refferring to, but haramein proposes the energetic structure which is the source of existence is the star tetrahedron, which is the same geometry as when a cube is rotated to appear like a hexagon, and then each corner connected. Like hinduism, the source of existence would also be the unification of all existence, as it proposes everything come from a single unified point. So in harameins context, the cube rotated to look hexagonal represents unity as well.

Then also the flower of life and metatrons cube
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flower_of_Life
They are ancient esoteric symbols which represents the root form of all existence and with that, essentially the unification point of all existence. A very similiar context to harameins.

Then if your familiar with all the culture and ideals of the 60's hippie movement, and the acid wave. Ram Dass, one of the pioneers of LSD, who spent his whole life working to help bring peace, shed differences, unify the people, and was a very pure representation of hippie ideals. His book 'be here now' which was one of the best selling books of the hippie movement held the 12 pointed star on it's cover.

All those lines intersect to form a hexagon encircling the chair.

And then again to hinduism, and their chakra system.
    http://mamashayna.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/chakra_img.gif
The hexagonal chakra, the green heart chakra, is the chakra in the middle of the energy system. It is said to unify the physical and spiritual planes. And is said to also be the chakra through which humans truly interrelate and come to fully understand one another, to unify... (through love obviously).

So I'm just really curious, was the hexagonal Unity symbol and the name unity conciously chosen to reflect all these esoteric meanderings? Or was it pure coincidence.

Or rather not coincidence... Coincidences are just illusions like random. Rather it'd be, the person unknowingly having their mind and creative impulse bump up against ancient wisdoms stored in the collective unconcious.

The Unity logo is made up of three black vectors on a white background!

woah. I never saw it like that before.

My brain processes everything in 3D, so I instantly saw it as a cube. If you look at it as though it's 2D, then ya it is 3 arrows.

but look at it like it's 3D. It's a cube in perspective

and at the angle it's rotated to, if the 3D projection were orthogonal, it would be a perfect hexagon

Wonderful analysis of the Unity icon. But how can a product with such a spiritual and peaceful logo be such a great tool for creating first person shoot up games where you kill and destroy all things living and breathing?

    It's very disturbing.

All brains process everything in 3d ;).. but I know what you mean..

I actually also thought it was a box too..
Or if you focus on where the 3 middle bars come together, and you see those pointing to the inside (instead of the outside) you will see some kind of corner, kinda cool.

Bah! It's a cube. Cos it would be a cool looking cube. But an ugly looking three vectors. And since Unity makes things that look cool... it must be a cube

I think they look cool! All glassy-like.

And the squished ivory diamonds are succulent as well. It's like some kind of really compact, mangled piano. :?:

The logo may have looked a good bit different 6 years ago, when this was originally posted...
