With Unity's amazing pickup in education, we decided to do something for the greater good: We're giving away 3 classroom sets of 20 Google Nexus Ones and Unity Android Pro to schools.

Yup, you're reading that right, we believe in education enough to back it up with our wallet and we're offering a quarter of a million dollars in licenses and hardware to help promote mobile app development in education! This is a request for proposals that in the end will result in three schools being equipped with a 20-seat lab environment, both the software (Unity Pro with Unity Android Pro) and hardware (Google Nexus Ones). We really do believe that mobile development is critical for anyone out there teaching/learning about content dev, games or otherwise. The simple truth is that more and more we have our primary "computing device" tucked into our pockets, those being smart phones, tablets, etc. Given that, and given the incredible surges by the iOS products and now Android devices, we decided to put our money where our mouth is and go with this offering. Hopefully educators will dig in to this as it's a great way to get a program up and running on the cheap. :)

Spread the word to anyone you know in education and send them our/my way if they have any questions!

    Tom,

I sit on the board of a couple gaming development programs here in H-town. I know, I know... Stop laughing. We actually do have a few game devs here...

Anyway, the question came up more than once about the timing of the R2 award. It looks as though the announcement for R2 doesn't happen until Feb. This puts the timing for the actual course to take place in the Fall of '11. Does this match y'all's expectation?

Yes, that matches the timing we envision today. Once we make a final decision on the who the three winning schools are they're going to need some time to get a full course plan done and ready and early 2011 can be used for just that purpose by the three selected schools.

Just curious if the result for the first round of education is out already or not. I sent our proposal to Davey Jackson but never heard anything from him!! Found in the forum that is a hard man to catch. So I am just curious if the result is out or not (as it is 4 days past the announcement time) so that we know if we should work towards the second deadline or not.
