Just want to jump into the conversation here,

I really have not seen any decent unity3D FPS games AT ALL, which is kind of disappointing. Aside from avert fate, there really is none. Here's what I have put together:

A very large percentage of the FPS game audience is children. Yes, children and generally young people. I know this because I myself am a "Child". I'm not sure what age defines you to be a child and not a child. Remember that this is all based on what I have seen.

Children ( remember I am still a child but I don't feel like I fit in as a general "child" ) seem to only care about graphics these days. It's all about the lens flares, the textures, the models. Not two S***s are given about the gameplay. Excuse my language.

So the kids who want to make games find unity, and they want to make their favorite type of game ( Call Of Duty ) So they download this engine, download the fps starter pack from dastardly banana, and start recruiting people to create the new call of duty that will take the world by its neck and shout in its face " F*** YEAH ". Again excuse my language.

Now the experienced developers ( mostly adults + young adults ) already know that there is not much point in making an FPS game in unity. For one, there's no competing with call of duty. Even if the game is better than call of duty, which I'm sure it probably is, People will not accept it. Call of duty is forever, as long as children are forever.

Pretty much the experienced developers have faced the truth and went off on their own ways creating exciting and awesome games, while the other people ( I don't like calling them children anymore. I think I should direct it to "Inexperienced Developers" ) just go ahead and think they can remake a franchise that has settled itself in the mud and is not coming out anytime soon.

So thus concludes my reasoning behind the missing link of good FPS games in the unity engine. I typed too much. I feel like I have carpal tunnel, no offense to anyone in this crowd who does have it. It's very serious and I'm sorry.

PS: I don't mean to sound cocky. I would not by any means consider myself professional or even experienced for that matter. But I have been hanging around for a while and trying out different engines, game types, and programming languages for years now, so I think I know my way around the indie games industry for the most part.

Not surprising, anybody who wants to do serious FPS will choose UDK or CE. Out of box made for FPS.

That is BS. Excuse my language. Just because UDK or the likes are geared towards these games doesn't make it the only choice. Serious FPS games can and are made with Unity. Shadowgun, Interstellar Marines, Warsoup are all great examples of what can be done. Problem is that it takes a special group of people (various talented and highly skilled people). Creating a FPS next to creating RPG's is incredibly work intensive no matter what engine you choose. The tool (engine) can help is making it easier (or harder) at times.

Mr Duskling, I'm seriously disappointed. That is complete BS. Unity is great for ANY type of game, sure, there are better options, but just flat out saying that you CANNOT create an FPS in Unity is ridiculous. Who said we had to compete with Call of Duty? You are generalizing all the FPS developers (of which I have seen good progress, both in my game and others) That has nothing to do with the ease of use of developing an fps in this engine. I agree that there are many inexperienced developers trying to get everything for nothing, but just leave Call of Duty "competition" out of this, there's absolutely no need to compare.

There are 2 FPS games that have made good progress using Unity:

    - Interstellar Marines
    - Drunken Lizard's FPS

There a re a few project on the forum that look interesting:
    - Dastardly Banana's FPS pack
    - Farooqaaa's FPS and
    - FPSProject

There are no really good complete FPS games made with Unity as far as I know and the above have been done by Indies. Which is what we are looking for right?

But in reality there are no really good FPS games released with UDK and CE and at the same time made by Indie devs.

The only one worth mentioning is "Red Orchestra" and that was made for the "Make something Unreal contest" with a million dollar prize.
Still it was a WWII shooter, so nothing really new.

Since it is so easy to develop FPS games with UDK and CE (out of the box functionality is 100% FPS ready), why aren't we swarmed with Finished, Complete, Amazing Indie Titles?

It's not because Unity isn't good as an FPS engine, it's because FPS games are hard to make and sticking stuff into UDK and CE just means you have to spend even more time making assets, since realism is obviously what you are aiming for there.

In the end it's too much work for a team of indies to make a decent sized, finished and polished FPS game no matter the engine.i would think Unity would favour smaller FPS games though like: Amnesia and Penumbra or Mirror's Edge, since you tailor the engine to what you want to achieve, not the other way round.

Seriously though point me to the shining examples of INDIE FPS games made with CryEngine or UDK. I bet it is really hard to find finished games or games that don't use the provided assets.

Now on the innovation and fun in FPS games:

Whoever says they are boring and nothing new exists is obviously not interested in the genre, since whoever is interested in FPS games finds innovative and exciting titles to play, else why would he be playing?

Or are you trying to say that FPS players are all boring and uninteresting?

I think since they are such a large group of people (15 mil. play COD MW3), maybe YOU are biased instead.

Play Mirror's Edge, Portal (yes, FPS), Bioshock, Deus Ex (1,2,3), Fallout, Rage etc. Even Skyrim is an FPS.

Anyway if you think that FPS games are boring, you probably enjoy another type of game that FPS gamers find boring. So basically your opinion is mute on the subject.

Shooters aren't too complicated if you think about it, there are lot's of single person / small teams that have created an fps.

Wow I hate to revive such an old thread but... It's been more than three years and Unity still has no fps games finished??? I love working with Unity, and the community is one of the reasons Unity is so great, but I had hope to see more made. pamelagame looks amazing and is worth noting.

No Heroes, Red Allegiance, and Interstellar Marines look promising. All are still actively being worked on though some are long overdue... Squad force looked interesting along with Elite Squad (both discontinued).

Games staying forever in early access isn't a problem limited to Unity games. There is Verdun (out of E/A) and others still in development like The Forest, Rust or 7 Days to Die. Imho the E/A tag being on them or not is meaningless anyway. The Forest seemed to be a very stable and polished product already. The last few times I played Verdun I didn't enjoy it very much compared to way older builds. On 7 Days to Die I've basically given up because I don't seem to share the vision the dev has for his game and I've started playing Rust recently. I think as an online shooter that one is among the most solid Unity has to offer. Just play on a 5X gather server if you don't like to grind and don't get attached to your stuff, because the next time you log in you'll most likely have been raided :D.

True, finished FPS games with Unity are a bit scarce, but there are actually a lot of them being worked on and in early access.

You mentioned mine there :) It's a hobby project at the moment, so it's not that serious like many of those games.
Elite Squad is not discontinued. They are still working on it, but probably don't want to spoil the game while in development, since it has changed quite a bit.

There are a few FPS games being developed like Escape from Tarkov, Pamela, Budget Cuts, WarArm,

In Early Access there are a lot of them: Rust, Onward (i want to play this so bad when i get a Vive), Interstellar Marines, The Forest, Red Alliance, Blackwake, Verdun, Unturned, 7 days to die.

Fully released FPS games you have SuperHot.

    I'm probably forgetting a few.

Actually fun to look back on games and engines they used. Haven't done that in a while :)

Well, does it really matter? I still think that Unity is a really fun and capable engine. I think the first problem is that many professional developers and studios is so familiar with their current engines (usually Unreal) that the "cost" of switching engines isn't worth it. I happen to mean cost in the broad sense, time and money etc...

There is also some things that Unity is lacking badly; official, standardized tools for material and script editing just to mention two. Artist friendly tools are really important in big studios and can boost production a lot.

But bouncing back to the original question, does it really matter if there is a big FPS hit on the market that was made with Unity? For Unity, yes, it probably matters but for us developers? Probably not, we know it can be done and that is the important thing... hmm... I guess that access to source code would also help a lot in AAA development when you get into optimization...

@eskovas yes I've followed your project and Interstellar Marines for a while now (who hasn't followed these). Red Alliance looks great especially as I'm a half life fan and the dev says he got a lot of inspiration from the series. There are many titles in early access that I forgot.

Elite Squad's situation is very controversial. As a game dev myself I understand not giving things away too soon, but after six (or seven I don't remember at the moment) years of development that started with frequent updates and now only one Facebook update every... six months? I hope they finish it.

Anyways I've been developing since Unity 3 came out and wanted to try my hand at a fps project programmed from the ground up by myself and just wanted to see what other developers have achieved with Unity. If you ever do any research into the forums on this subject, you will be quite depressed unfortunately. Most don't believe a good fps game can be made with unity. I just wanted to update this list for any future developers to see quality fps games are possible. I hope to add my own within the next couple months once I get a decent prototype finished.

@Deon-Cadme yes most developers argue that other engines are more suited for fps development. I'm looking forward to seeing what devs make with unity in the fps genre. As eskovas mentioned above, several titles have made it to greenlight and that is good news for Unity.

Maybe talk to @Master-Frog, he mentioned he wanted to start working on an FPS too.

Also take a look at Devil Daggers. Scope wise that's the smallest FPS I've ever really enjoyed I think. It could be reasonably done as a one man project. I've even considered trying to make something like that myself.

There's also the OneManArmy's AU Modern FPS, which is pretty good. His latest videos are only against waves of enemies, but there's also multiplayer matches against other players.
It's has very fluid gameplay and also nice looking:

    Are you freaking KIDDING ME?

The game industry has been around for decades, and all we ever see is the same crap repeated ad infinitum.
Yes, we've had more innovation in the past few years with indies or tiny changes with iterations of the same thing that felt like major changes. But overall, it's as stagnant as humanely possible.

In many ways the game industry has regressed, not progressed. We've taken a big step forward in shallow graphics, and a big step backwards in depth of gameplay.

Games made in the 90's, before PC gaming became such a billion dollar industry, were infinitely more innovative than the regurgitated crap we see today.

Developers have to go out of their way to make a game that doesn't feel innovative in some way. Yet they do. Worse in AAA, but still plentiful in indie titles. It's understandable, but overall disappointing (up to enraging).

Hell, in what game do you not mindlessly kill everything like a psychopath (outside of specific genres like casual mobile or the Sims)? We're only mow finally seeing the death of Call of Duty regurgitation. If even. What MMO in the last decade is anything iterative of the 'golden era' games? So few, and those are just iterative, not innovative. It's laughable.

We don't even have iterations of games 3 decades old that are beloved by all (Starlight) and those with the depth of a game 2 decades old? (Fallout 1 & 2) I don't see many, and those I see are by Indies with small budgets.

We see mostly clones, and a lot of them BAD clones.
The game industry fails at iteration.
How can anyone think it succeeds at innovation?

Do you even watch movies outside of the biggest blockbusters? There are still some fantastic movies that give freshness to the industry.

Hell, even the way we shoot movies is innovated upon. Ever see Hardcore Henry? Very fresh and interesting perspective. Almost like playing a video game. I've never felt like that before. It's not even close to the cool but dizzying/annoying camera view of stuff like Cloverfield or similar attempts. Well done IMO.

Movies are also much more limited than games, and have been around much longer. So there is little comparison. Movies rely on plot, scripts, humans, and now effects.

Games rely on interactive systems, human perception of those systems, and effects. Sometimes also movie stuff in niche genres (ex. Telltale games).

And games like Dwarf Fortress have never even come close to innovating on. Right now we have a handful of Indies who created clones or iterations- most not released yet. Many shallow versions of DF (a step backwards).

AI is still pretty stupid in most games. Still tons of cheating just for them to stay competitive.

Anyway, I could go on & on. The games industry is disgustingly stagnant of innovation, incredibly greedy, and void of much artistic integrity. Even at its best, 'Year of the Indie' where some games are finally not lameass platformers. And as much as No Man's Sky disappointed many people, at least it's trying.

So we've made some progress in the past few years. But boy do we have a lot of room to improve.

I truly don't understand how most don't unintentionally innovate just by making games. The lack of innovative thought in much 'innovative thinking' is scary. And some game's success because of innovation is not at all surprising, but hilarious given how flawed or lacking they are. We're just that desperate for innovation. I know I am. That's why I went gamedev.

Wow @CarterG81 please let's not revive a dead argument. Those posts are 6 years old and similar arguments are all over the forums. The original question asks for the best unity fps and that's what I tried to revive.

Ergh. Didn't see the dates. Fixed that by wrapping it in a spoiler tag.
    Thanks.
If I knew this was NECRO'd, I wouldnt have wasted my time ranting against someone who is probably long since dead.

Please do not necro a thread like this. This is THE REASON why many forums have rules to prevent NECRO posting.

This is not something you want NECRO'd. It's not a bug issue or a technical question. It's a casual conversation thing. I mean seriously? 3-6 years later?

Just make a new thread about it. Link back here, or quote/mention it has been years since.

Now that I've got the "Real" First Post...

I also love working with Unity Engine, agree the community is one of the reasons Unity is so great, but it's no surprise here.

Unity has always been, and always seems to be, mostly for mobile games. That's what I hear anyway. I'm far far away from the mobile market, so I've never really checked if that was true. Just hear it a lot.

For 2D games, the engine doesn't provide enough & actually can hurt development. For 3D games, they tend to have rancid performance problems or suffer from rushed development, and many gamers (myself included) wince at the knowledge that a game was "made with Unity". (Ori & similar 2D games are probably the only ones exempt from this. That game ran flawlessly. Well done.)

So not a lot of interest in Unity as an engine, outside of a few successful kickstarters which are founded on the idea of rushed development cycles. (Like I said, not including mobile.)

There's a lot of PC games / kickstarters that use Unity, but I honestly don't understand why for some of them. Mostly lame platformers or slow paced games. Some strategy or turn based. Lots of Kickstarters so they can sell/believe the idea of "Develop Fast!", but that's pretty limited even though it seems like everyone does it.

Cities Skylines & Endless Legends & Shroud of the Avatar (which have horrible performance), Pillars of Eternity, Ori, The Forest / Long Dark, Dyscourse / Night in the Woods. Shadowrun Returns & Wasteland 2. All pretty slow paced games.

Those are the only games I even recognized on their showcase gallery.

So it's less about there not being very many FPS games, and more about there not being very many games, period.

I mean, there's plenty more than what I listed, but they're unknown games, mobile games, and nothing the majority of gamers would ever recognize.

At the end of the day, it seems that even after Unity has exploded with popular titles like Hearthstone & all those veteran developers hopping on Kickstarter, Unity is still not very big of an engine. Popular games just aren't made using it. Unpopular games...well, they usually suck & so are very hard to notice.

It's no problem. I normally encourage people to necro threads, hehe. Although those are usually more technical in nature.

But if you think this was best, I believe you. I can't always be right ;)

Locking this thread as it is over 7(!) years old since it first started and is definitely a necro thread.

You are more than welcome to make a new thread talking about current Unity and the FPS Genre. :D
