Gimp would most likely work fairly well on an older, low power PC...or you could do a Google/Bing/whatever search and do more detailed research for other alternatives. There are a lot of useful resources out there like this one.

    Just my $0.02...

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with Maya, but looking at some Maya UV-related resources it looks like Ryiah's Blender UV tutorial link in this thread is similar to Maya's UV tools, or you could grab something like Ultimate Unwrap (which I love...I've been using it since my TGE days). Ultimately I can't make the decision for you, so I would do some research on "Maya UV alternatives" or "Mudbox alternatives", choose what best fits your needs, then hunker down and learn the toolset.

    Practice makes perfect, right?

Um Mayas UV is really simple. Its already almost completed you just need to scale and fit the UVs in a manner they fit in a scale and dont overlap each other then you can send it to mudbox then paint it as i like and export paint layer finished import it in unity, unreal they will be ready to be applied to the material. But Unfortunately Maya Cost around 5K Dollars so I just went to a 30 Days trial. That too when my bro has cane home from his collage. Well but I except UV stuff like blender more than maya
