I know you can use maps from high-poly models onto the lower-poly version (the normal map, ect)

But can you do the same with a texture maps?

Like, you make the texture map for the hi-poly model (in whatever way you wish) cna you apply that to the lower-poly model?

As long as the UV coordinates are the same, yeah.

Are you talking Unity Terrain? The MegaShapes package in the Asset Store does all sorts of contortions with textures on terrains.

For a regular mesh sure it's the same.

That all depends on what 3D software you are using. I do it all the time in maya and you don't need the same uv's. I'm sure most 3d software has this feature.

You know Maya LT 2015 has Substance Designer support built in and so Maya 2015 must too. I don't know enough about Substance Designer to help. You should ask the Algorithmic guys though. I would say that you need to bake into one big texture before reducing poly count and after you do that you can't use Substance Designer on the model, but ask the experts that wrote Substance Designer.

Oh, definitely expensive if he's bought a Maya 2013 perpetual license.

As to what other license types? I thought it was...you pay the 1 grand (however much Maya is) and you spend the same amount to upgrade.

Yes you can, and it's a pretty standard practice just like baking normal maps.
