Terrain Data corrupted? Source control...

    Hey all,

    I'm using Unity's Terrain system in 2019.3 and have my terrainData stored as asset files. I'm also using Git and SourceTree for my source control. I accidentally deleted all my trees I had painted, and so I went to my source control and discarded the change on my terrainData asset. But now when I come back to Unity, the entire file is corrupt and it shows this:

    I even repulled my entire git and opened in a new Unity project, and it still says 'unknown error' for all my terrainData assets...

    Has anyone encountered this before? Or know how to prevent it from happening in the future?
    How are terrainData asset files supposed to be handled in source control?

    I lost a lot of work here, so any answer or suggestion would be highly appreciated.
