    Hi all,

I'm just introducing you to the Tai-Pan Development Set which showcases game creation techniques using Unity and modo 501, with additional work being completed in Photoshop, Sculptris and Maya + additional free software. In fact, we will try and produce as much using free software as we can.

    Overview:

Tai-Pan is a naval trading/economy game set in an Asian environment c.1840. The Tai-Pan Development Set is not fixed to this era or game type. Everything you will see within the development could easily be used to build many game types (especially RTS).

Every area of the game development process will be covered, including modeling, texturing and surfacing, 3D application -> Unity workflows to build optimised 'game-ready' assets, AI, world economy system, C# scripting... and much much more.

Every asset made or seen within the Tai-Pan Development Set will be given to the subscriber 100% Royalty Free - no strings attached! Even if you never follow a single tutorial video, you will still be receiving every model, texture, piece of music made and used. You are free to use any asset within any of your game projects you like - free or commercial. The only caveat is that you don't resell them as assets in any way (that includes sticking them on an Asset store too) and you don't try and release the Tai-Pan game as yours.

New parts are released every few weeks, including full Models, Textures and Unity Project Files.

    01/08/2011 Tai-Pan officially starts

Saw this the other day and really liked it. Was actually hoping to use it in a class I'm teaching but it wasn't far enough along yet. I'll definitely be picking it up though if for nothing more than to see your process for creating the boats in Modo.

Yes, it did take an additional few weeks to get off the ground due to everything else associated with it (ie website etc)... that said, it is now 'full steam ahead' with about 4 sections totaling 18 parts in just over a month. The Sampan boat is approx. 3 hours in duration for the modeling section alone. UVW Creation and custom texturing should be live by weekend. Then we shall be back in Unity getting the scripting up to date with the promo video. Also note that all the models made (ie the Sampan are royalty free for your projects... all we ask is that they are not resold/redistributed 'outside' a project as individual assets etc). We will be modeling the houses, boats, mountains, cranes etc in the next few parts.

    Regards,
    Matt.

Just a quick shout out to subscribers that the base Unity project files are live and available to download today.

As it also contains all the current models and textures (approx. 30 models) it is quite a big download. The new Sampan model which we built in previous tutorials is also included. It is build on Unity 3.4.1f5 Pro, but should work ok within Unity Free.

This is the project version that all subsequent tutorials will be built upon.

I will release a few videos over the next few weeks going over the project files in detail and talk about all the components and how they interact, plus discuss a roadmap for the development taking us up till January.

    Best Regards,
    Matt.

Just a quick shout out to subscribers that the November tutorial videos are starting to go live today.

This month sees us starting the world economy system. Two new parts are currently uploaded with new parts been released weekly until we make good inroads into this section. We will probably break in mid-December from the scripting and work on something a bit more visually creative.

Thanks again for everyone who supports the Tai-Pan Development Series!

    Best Regards,
    Matt.

Just a quick shout out to subscribers that the March videos are live.

In this section we are looking at ways of saving player data/GameObjects to the file system and recreating GameObjects at a later time.

Hello Matt, first of all I think you've done a wonderful job on your last tutorial set (io dev diary).

Now when I found these new tutorials your working on I thought yes, professional tutorials which I'm happy to pay for, but then I looked at your release list and saw that your at "04/03/2012" ... so does that mean no more to come? is that where you're ending the series?

Yes they are on hold at the moment whilst I get Montague's Mount 'out the door', and you are unable to subscribe. My apologies.

Hopefully in the new year we will be able to start up Unity tuts again.

    Best Regards...
