Switching from Mesh Renderer to Skinned Mesh Renderer causes the model to immediately go invisible.

Everything looks perfect with just Mesh Renderer applied. As soon as I add Skinned Mesh Renderer, it goes invisible, and nothing I do will bring it back. I've checked Update when Offscreen. I've specified the mesh and the materials.
It only does this with the specific mesh I'm trying to use. If I switch to other meshes (e.g. Sphere, Cube), they appear correctly. If I then switch back to the mesh I want to use, it will appear in the shape of the previous mesh selected, but oddly distorted.
