swap graphics for keyframe animations - is that possible?

    maybe my keywords are wrong... i did not find anything with the search.

    currently i have a character that i animate with keyframe animations. all animations are in my animator - everything works fine.
    as a next step i want more characters. those characters painted in the exact same format - all animation steps in one png file. the question now is: can i use the animation data from my first character for my other characters? basically i would just need to swap the source png files in my theory. is that possible?

    that is great! i am a bit worried about the memory problem he is addressing though. is there a cleaner solution maybe?
