I've been thinking hard about the trailer for my first public game, Don't Shoot the Puppy. It's an odd one because there is arguably only one gameplay mechanic, which is holding down the button. I would love any suggestions on how I could showcase my game properly in video, preferably in a funny way. It has been a challenge for me so far.

For some background, see the IndieDB page here, or the Unity forum thread for additional detail here.

If you need a tl;dr here is the an official summary:
Thanks a ton, any help would be amazing.

All I've been able to come up with so far are some really lame half-clips. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Quick and dirty: You could have video with rapidly flickering vignettes of the puppy blowing up: boom! boom! boom! and over the top of it have some fake quotes fading in and out, from fake magazines, etc. about how amazingly complex the gameplay is, how satisfying it is to hold a button, etc. And then at the very end, the puppy walks and doesn't get shot, and the camera slowly gets closer and closer, and then right before it gets to wherever it's going, it gets shot. Cut to black: "Don't Shoot the Puppy".

Hmmm, I could roll with that. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll update this later.

I asked my wife what kind of video she would make, and she said pretty much the same, except that during the opening BOOM shots, you don't actually see the puppy, just explosions over and over, and the puppy is gradually revealed. The whole time, this is playing (start at 13:58 minutes if it doesn't do it automatically):

Holy crap. That's such a good idea for the trailer.

Thats a great idea because then I don't need to show repetitive gameplay and I can get past the one minute barrier. brb.

Looks good, tho I was so distracted by the explosions I missed the quotes. I did see Giant Berm, that just made me think of Cartman saying "it's a giant berm, guys" for some reason

You could also go for a counter ad with an evil cat trying to force players to do something so it does shoot the puppy. Then show the cats looking smug (that should be the easy bit)

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually considered an antagonist, but as I am porting from an existing game, I couldn't diverge too much from the main theme. I'll see what I can do about the quotes.

I think you should make a sequel called "Don't kill the puppy", where puppy could die in various ways, not only by a gun.

Hah, yeah. A funny puzzle type, which is probably what most people are expecting. I hope the game gets popular enough to warrant a sequel.

How about "don't kill the game dev"? (Depending on your reviews)
