Any modern file system explorer has forward and back buttons, but the project window in the Unity editor does not. Is there anyone else that thinks this would be super useful to add?

Was just thinking I'm working on prefabs and the original meshes at the same time. this would be incredibly handy for going back and forth between 2 folders which does come up from time to time without having to cycle a large project fall of folders down a slide bar menu.

someone made this, looks very handy, but didn't see it work on folders.

I could not agree more, viewing your assets is a pain, to the point where sometimes I can't be bothered looking through them properly and perhaps use somethign I wouldn't have if there was a back and forward button. I was just thinking there I wonder how easy it would be to make this ourselves? Or impossible..?

I would also like to see a simple Back button in project window. I'm surprised this thread hasn't received much attention yet. This such an obvious functionality missing from an otherwise great product.

Another request that never caught anyone's attention...

I'd very much like to see a back button in the project view too.

I've never considered wanting a back button in the project view. You may like locking windows even better. You can open as many windows as you want of any type, then lock each one to avoid them from changing when you click on various things. This comes in very handy when you need to see multiple things at once.

Too messy, especially when a good old back/forward small arrow would do the trick neatly. Each time I browse the project assets, I look for it.

Need this, particularly when I click on a reference on some game object and want to go back to where I was before.

It's a pain to find the path all over again.

I've wanted this for years. It should also work with the forward and back mouse buttons.

The same buttons on the Inspector window would be just as useful.

Hey, I tried to make that, with the help of starting code from CutCopyPaste (originally from http://twitter.com/talecrafter)
    Now you can
    - Copy (Ctrl+C) Cut (Ctrl+X) Paste (Crtl+V)
    - Back (Alt+Left) Forward (Alt+Right) Up one level (Alt+Up)

    Known issue:
    - Might still not stable and bugged. Please report issue to my github, not here, I'm not monitoring unity forum.

Wappenull, thanks a lot, you are a life-saver.
I missed this functionnality for such a long time (and don't really understand why it's not in Unity by default).

I would really like that feature too.
It seems that individual assets in Project Window can be customized, but I haven't found a way to extend the Window's UI.

That's cool, it's working! I also noticed this plugin: https://github.com/acoppes/unity-history-window in your list of references, may be useful for users who want to go further with a full navigation history.

For now I'm just using unity-cutcopypaste-nav, and in fact, noticed that cut/copy/paste assets was added to native Unity editor since. Fortunately the native and custom code seem compatible, I have no error, the custom code takes priority (I can see a red outline when cutting) and seems to work the same.

But for minimalism, it may be nice to disable cut/copy/paste, at least in Unity versions where this is native. I couldn't find the place in code that binds the shortcuts Ctrl+C/X/V, but it seems hardcoded as I don't see it in the list of shortcuts (Edit > Shortcuts). Maybe later I can try to just remove cut/copy/paste code and cleanup until it compiles; but right now I'm adding your repo as a package so it's read-only.

And I still think Unity needs to make it native. We got it for cut/copy/paste, so maybe it will arrive some day...

Thanks for letting me know that it finally they has it in native!
I'm somehow still on 2020.3.18f1, didn't know which version they adding this?

For the shortcut, yea, looks like the original author hardcoded it. The main function is at
    CheckForCutCopyPasteCommands
if you want to just remove that functionality.

The best way is to probably check a preprocessor version define against the minimal version that has this native feature.

    > code seem compatible
Credit goes to original coder, he did a good job, lol.

    > maybe it (other feature) will arrive some day
Yea, with fancy back/forward button :)

Edit: Found the version, I might add #ifdef to my plugin later (?)
Let's hope that they will also add explorer navigation too :p so my plug in can finally rest in peace.
