I've searched around and can't seem to find a definitive answer for this. Has there been a method (asset) created for creating real-time ambient occulsion using Unity Free?

I spotted that one, but "out of the box" it doesn't work, and his documentation is...well...lacking. He also hasn't responded to someone else telling him it's not working.

Why not bake it. The image effect is slow on real-time and almost unusable. Baking works in free.

Realtime SSAO is a process that require high CPU (or GPU) use, then is not recomendable use it in games, remember that the new standard shader PBS in Unity 5 (Unity Free too) have Occlusion maps that works fine for obtain a good SSAO effect.

Well I'm looking to use it for animated objects as well...

I'm presently using 4.6...and didn't have plans to upgrade to 5 yet. ...and I'm assuming I'd still run into the same problem that I'm facing right now. Would these occulsion maps work for animated objects?

Depend of the situation, occlusion effect is darker zones in "occluded" parts of the mesh where the light affect less, then if your mesh is animated and this animation change this parts occluded of the mesh the effect with a oclussion map not work fine, in resume a oclussion map work fine if the animated mesh have minor changes in the occluded zones. A occlusion map work fine with animated lights.
