Well after a month of working with unity, things are starting to come together:

This video capture is about 5 days old now - I've since changed out the UI, and have added the ability to build space stations from scratch.

    A little about this game...

It is going to be a mix of simulation/strategy with some building elements mixed in for good measure. Everything in this game is customizable, from the ships to the stations and guns. The game world consists (depending on size options) between 5-50 solar systems, each with 0-8 planets. What you see in the video is an example of a planet area.

The game will emphasize strategy and simulation elements, so it will play more like transport tycoon mixed with civilization or sim city. There will be fighting, but it will be more passive (the weapons auto track, you don't actually fly around shooting stuff directly).

I'm developing this game on a $300 laptop, so pretty much any decent machine can run this. It runs at around 140fps on this computer, with most of my testers reporting an average of 2-3% cpu usage and 40 megs of video ram. I'm a software engineer by day who works on large billion-row data sets, so as you can imagine, this game will be all about complex simulations; and I watch the profiler window like a hawk.

If anyone wants to help test or give ideas/feedback let me know.

And thanks to the unity team, their engine is amazing :)

Thanks man! I also live stream 100% of the development live on twitch just about every weekday night and all weekend. You can look up essial on twitch, though I'll warn you watching development isn't exactly exciting 90% of the time :)
