Space Shooter Tutorial :Laser Bolt disappears with any shader other than the standard.

I am new to Unity and am having trouble with the Space shooter tutorial. When I go to create the shots and drag the material onto the quad, it has a black box around it just like in the video. When I change the shader as the video says, the bolt image disappears. I have tried every other shader offered and no help. Does any one know what I am doing wrong. Please help.
