It's probably unlikely that this is a Unity problem. But I thought I'd give it a shot anyways, since it's quite a bothersome problem.

Long story short, It was time for me to start using a VCS for my project since it was starting to develop nicely. So I decided to do it the UI VCS mercurial approach. I'm on a mac, so I chose sourcetree for my weapon of choice. I created the repository. Selected the project folder. and...then in the file list on source tree there are these dozen or so files called 'eta' I cannot remove them from sourcetree nor do I know what is telling sourcetree that these files exist...There are no hidden files called 'eta' in my project folder. And apparently they are somehow related to my these 'icon .meta' files that Unity created automatically in my asset folder and sub-folders.

This is the content of one of the icon files

I've submitted an issue to SourceTree feel free to take a look at the details and screenshots on there.

If anyone has any input or fix on this please let me know, Thanks!

Okay, I removed all of the 'Icon .meta' files I found in each sub-folder in my assets folder and SourceTree seems to be behaving properly now. So it's all good now, however...If anyone can tell me how/why these 'Icon .meta' Files came to materialize in my project folders that would be great. No, I have never created or imported a file called 'Icon', so if you're gonna mention that unity created a meta file for a file I created called 'Icon', then that would not be true.

All I have done recently is fiddle with some project>editor settings toggling Show visible meta files or Force Binary, Text, Mixed etc.

    Thanks

This happened to me when I copied my folders over from Google Drive. They have the little folder icon that's specific to google drive folders and so it created .meta files for them and also screwed my Git project up.
