    why can't i check the box next to Legacy? The console says that this should be one, but I can't

    I'm not sure why you wouldn't be able to toggle it directly, but Animancer (link in my signature) adds a "Toggle Legacy" Contact Menu Function to do it. You might also be interested in using Animancer itself since it solves most of the reasons people choose Legacy over Animator Controllers.
