I think that will all come at Unite - they are showing the rest of the adam movie then, plus shader goodies, from what I understand.

I'm a bit more interested in how they did the cloth ripping animation early on in the movie. It looks pretty cool.

Looks good, but I suppose it uses features that won't be released for years.

Oh ok that's good. Just based on previous demos they have a tendency to use features that are not available for ages if ever.

Adam demo is amazing. Most of the image effects are available now, director comes soon™, area lights will come soon™... Jokes aside, there is some pretty serious work going on at the graphics department and it shows. It is the first time i am more intrigued by Unity's demo at GDC than Unreal's. If someone is really picky may comment on specular highlights aliasing, I am not. Splendid work not only on graphics but on every aspect, script, animation, lighting, sound, everything. Congrats to the people who made it happen.

Analytics are out of beta which is good, Ads work for some, Cloud Build seems more robust, more platforms are available for free. One year after the big Unreal - Unity fight, the winner for indies shows, in the games showcased. They look good and many of them are made from little studios.

At first glance, the stable and beta versions seem to be a way to mask a deviation from the roadmap, aka a delay from publishing 5.4 on time. But there are more in this actually. Long time publishers who weren't Pro customers asked for access to beta, now it is there. In my opinion, publishing for the asset store is the only good reason for someone to use betas now. Stable version sounds like a really nice concept, everyone will love to see it materialized. 5.4 new features are seriously hot - progressive lightmapping, rendering etc speed boost but stability is more important to some. Let's see it coming.

Documentation improves, asset store gets sanitized, things move forward. And no Microsoft/Autodesk/Adobe acquisitions, yet. I think Sequoia won its bet.

I think the big news was that 5.3.4 is stable. It finally works

I totally agree with Unity shifting to only releasing new versions when they are deemed stable as opposed to just releasing to make some deliverable date. This will save a lot of headaches for a lot of people. Unity 5.2 was such a pain so this is a Great move on the part of Unity.

I also agree with opening access to Beta Releases as this will increase the amount of feedback Unity gets to further ensure the releases are stable.

    Good job Unity!

It's an interesting about face. Seems like they are simply moving back to the way things worked in th 4.X cycle.

The problems with this approach haven't gone away.

Given that historically, major releases were deemed stable by the majority of users and that patches and beta releases were not, a lot of user would only update to major releases. Unfortunately, when Unity 5.2 was released and turned out to not be really stable, you had tons of users caught by surprise. At that point, you ended up with a major dilemma for users which was "When to upgrade?" If major releases are not necessarily stable and patches are not either nor is beta then when is it safe to upgrade?

I agree this change doesn't solve all potential issues but at least it will allow users to feel more confident when upgrading to major releases.

Not saying it will be bad. Just remembering how much of an applause there was when 5.0 was released and Unity announced the "We will release on time" model, released the road map and all that. Both models have pros and cons.

It's a great idea to open up beta. This is how it should have always been, and I've said it a few times before. There are no downsides providing people are made clear what is stable and what is beta. I don't see a downside to this, and I hope I don't see a return to 4.x days. I think that so long as its available by the roadmap date then no harm done. I think what we see here is honesty:

previously, unity would ship a new version on time, but it was far from done, so might as well just keep calling it beta.

Me too! Being able to work more itterative is going to be awesome :)

Does anyone know anything more about the visual results the new lightmapper could produce in comparison to the current solution?

I don't think anyone knows more than what was shown at the event.

Are you referring to the Unity Multiplayer service? Pricing is listed near the bottom of the page.

Is the new progressive baking in 5.4 the PowerVR one, or that will come in a later version?

So Unity Collaborate - what am I missing? Are Unity doing versioning software again?
To be honest I would probably prefer better integration with existing versioning systems (The pro Perforce plugin could use some stability updates).

Hmm, without using any of the new fancy bits, I ran a basic interior scene (3DForge DragonInn demo), in 5.3.2 and 5.4.0b10 - It was actually 30fps slower in 5.4 and rendering time was identical.

Obviously need to run more tests.

I'm really excited about the GPU instancing stuff. This will really open the door in terms of how much crap I can shove onto the screen and can make a really huge difference in terms of scene composition.

Something that I noticed in the Progressive Bake when Joachim moved the mesh, it forced re-bake the whole level and lights again. I guess this is because the feature is not finished, it really needs to bake only the affected lightmaps, instead of baking the whole level when you only move 1 tiny mesh or light.

Rather than make a new thread, I just wanted to thank whoever disabled the chat/discussion box for the live stream. It started out amusing, then became really vile. I'd suggest just having disabled from the start in the future.

It was fun for a while, made me laugh a lot, and then it just got really nasty really quickly. If it had stayed with the same sort of humor as it started with, then it probably wouldn't have been disabled part way into the stream.

Well so far for me 5.4 has been my reporting a bug that was closed because somebody else already reported it and my WebGL compilation for my project that was finally fixed in the 5.3.x product cycle is broken again in 5.4. I have yet to test the other build option that was fixed in the 5.3 product cycle, that being the Windows Store Universal 10 SDK builds.

I thought 5.4.0b10 was the sum of 5.3.4f1 and new 5.4 features? Is this not the case?

I will make bug reports for WebGL and maybe Windows Store Universal 10 builds.
