It seems like all you graphics enthusiasts are going to be getting those lighting features you're always clamoring for. Good for you.

Hmmmm, official Unity certification. That's interesting. I'll have to see what the possibilities are for that. Wouldn't mind having that on my record.

Online accreditation from Unity themselves based on a test you can take. Also mentioned a course coming soon to lead to that accreditation. Works in a similar way to a learning institute can offer training, but comes/is validated by Unity. Presumably similar to this one from Google for Android: https://www.udacity.com/course/android-developer-nanodegree--nd801

Best that I could get though, was drifting in and out of it.

Accreditation seems to be now (they're offering it at GDC) and course coming "soon".

Ha I saw even less of that as I came in late.

Pretty things in engine is my take from it. Which I assume is all you need to know...

So is certification a test of how well you can work around unity engine bugs?

...I joke. Well... mostly a joke.

Isn't 5.4 supposed to be released tomorrow?

We're supposedly supposed to be getting DX12 rendering.......or something right? Like it's a pretty huge tomorrow? Someone confirm?

Roadmap is pointing towards June now. Unity 5.4 is going through a public beta though so it is downloadable.

Ah ok thanks. I had a feeling it wouldn't be fully stable or anything yet, but at least we can beta test it :)

"The Demo team also created some custom tools on top of the Unity engine to cover specific production needs. For this project we needed volumetric fog, transparency shader, motion blur – to name a few. Expect to have them in your hands after Unite Europe."

    Sounds promising!

You know not to be too cynical here, but does anyone else get the feeling the beta is really just the normal release and they're calling it that for a few patches because they know people will complain about it otherwise? :p

Well apparently you can get the volumetric fog from github, decent motion blur well besides from Amplify motion (which is good), area lights you can simulate with diffuser cards..

The rest is post effects from Unity Japan's github.

But I want to see tangeable performance increases and safeguards in play before I start swooning over Unity, built to house and withstand what ever you throw at it with fludity across the board.. Which engines that are made for PC / Console do it in their stride with little to no fuss.. If you're going to the expense / time to make a game with graphics like this, you might as well make the rest of it as good as it can be too.

Sorry to be a little skeptical guys, I'm amazed at how far Unity has come in a small amount of time.

The progressive lightmap baking thing looked cool. I didn't really catch if that's in 5.4 beta as well or down the line?

It's not in right now, but I think the plan is to roll it out in a later beta.

Just a note, as it's mentioned in the roadmap, this is subject to change, if 5.4 is of not good enough quality and stable enough to release we won't.

    Exact quote for super accuracy;

"Please note that our primary goal is to provide you with stable and reliable releases. As such, any indications of target release dates and features listed are subject to change."

Where? If you're referring to this:

    https://github.com/robertcupisz/LightShafts

That's a very different effect from what was shown today.

Doesn't the comparison chart on between personal and pro need to be updated on the unity website? At least the way I read the blog posts about the beta and quality, it sounds like this beta policy will also apply to future versions, pro will not be necessary to have beta access? Or maybe I have interpreted it wrong. Cheers.

I believe the intent is that pro owners will have the first look, and it's past release date for 5.4 now so a public beta release is more than fair.

Sticking with 5.3.4 or such is the wise move for people who need more stability.

I thought it was a change in policy where all betas will now be open to try and boost the amount of beta testing coverage and produce more stable releases faster?

After all lots of people have been complaining about the stability and the number of bugs they find in releases.

Well I know from the language used on the blog post about quality that this isn't a one-off:

Either way it would be good to update the comparison chart - either to give personal a tick next to betas, or change the wording so that pro users 'early access' to beta is stated.

Personally I would appreciate clarity from Unity as to whether you are right or not as I have a decision about my pro subscription to make in the coming days.

Great indoor demo, but still no advanced terrain and outdoor long distance shadowing solution.

I also hope all this will be integrated in the editor and make it more complete.
There is a free plugin for vertex painting but i am surprised Unity editor still does not have one integrated.

I believe according to the roadmap, there's a solution coming for at least shadow stability along large distances, in 5.5.

The image effects are still made of several scripts instead of one script only. Will effects be combined as one script like Scion plugin for performance ?

Later 5.4 beta, or a beta after 5.4?

(so my question is, is there a (whatever small) chance it will make it into 5.4?)

The cinematic image effects have their own thread thats been around a few months now, I think perhaps that question has already been asked there before but can't remember for sure:

That would be cool like the standard shader they could be combined in theory reducing their overall performance impact.

@Tim C mentioned that they'd be doing something like that later, on the thread - skim through and have a read. Probably doesn't make sense to do optimisation this early... don't forget there is more to come!

    (And I can't wait).
