This shows up when going into the Player Settings. Also I'm not sure if it's related, but even in new projects the editor has been very laggy. Sometimes it'll clear up for a second and then go right back to lagging.

The lag issue is very odd. I'm not sure what changed but it's not lagging at this moment, but when I went back to 5.0.0f4 that editor started lagging. Strange.

I tried to create a new project, and the error appeared once project initialize.

    It stopped after a while.
Then, when I tried to switch platforms, the Backend not initialized errors started again.

    Any workarounds?

I happens whenever the standalone target is selected. The error starts even before the "switch platform" button is pressed, as long as the Standalone option is highlighted in the platform selector.

A full reboot seems to fix it.

Same here. The first startup results in a laggy editor but after restarting the editor, it's fine.

    I posted bug #691658.

I can start/stop the flood of spam by showing Player settings in the inspector.
