Shadows, backs of cubes way too dark?

How do I make the backs of the cubes actually visible instead of pitch black? Changing shadow intensity in the directional light only makes the shadows a bit more transparent, but the backs remain pitch black no matter what I do.

Try changing the ambient light settings (should be under the Lighting tab).

Even if you turned off shadows altogether the directional light wouldn't reach the back of the cube because the direction of the surface (surface normal) and the light direction don't match up. So unless you have other lights in your scene, the only illumination that should apply to the back of your cube is ambient light (which provides a base level of illumination for everything).

In case that's not it though, I also remember getting weird lighting once when I unchecked the "Auto Generate" option in the lighting tab, reimported the scene into a different project and forgot to re-generate the lighting.

It's called "Environment Lighting" in that screenshot, and the source is set to the Skybox colour so it should already be configured properly (or at least it shouldn't give you pitch black lighting). Tick the "Auto Generate" checkbox at the bottom of your screenshot to apply it. (Or press "Generate Lighting" every time you make changes)

I've found changing the "Ambient Mode" setting to baked when I'm using baked lighting for my vrchat worlds helps smooth out those dark shadows and bring color back to textures. Didn't know it was an option until today. heh.
