So where is everyone going since apparently Unity is now run by Elon Musk?

Im debating between Godot or Unreal.

Godot is very similar, but is seriously lacking in tools.

Unreal is good, but a complete beast.

And Unity might as well not exist.

A year of work gone in an instant.

Please fire whoever did this after you revert with your tail between their legs.

EDIT: Im legit in tears here.

Stock value has gone up since the anouncement :p
No tail between the legs in the near future.

I sense the same fears and "fleeing" that did not pan out the slightest like after the joining of Ironsource..

Anyways, seems like moderation wishes to consolidate this whole topic to that one main thread (see the locked threads here).

The difference between this and Ironsource is that this will have a direct impact on developers, it's not just optics.

Yeah, I dev on a laptop on the couch next to the misses after work so that’s about the size of it.

Technically true, but it's a smaller fraction of devs affected than it seems like people believe.
Many questions open yet of course.

Yeah, but you do understand this is per install, not purchase???

People are going to cross that threshold and end up in the negative in an instant.

this is the dumbest thing they could have ever done and if the stock had a bump it’s because shareholders are dumb.

this is a death sentence, point blank.

I'm too many years into my project to abandon it. I don't know what to do.

Maybe my tinfoil hat is on too tight but I think it's more sinister than that. Unity is capitulating the big data/ monopoly stranglehold that has destroyed our world. All this talk of proprietary tools to determine who pays and who doesn't. They're part of this giant monopoly machine now. They can determine if you are profitable or not at the flip of a switch, they're part of the giant machine with total control and when you are... you get $$$.

    Fealty > Product

Guess which engine isn't allowed on the apple market? Unreal...

Same here man, it's like a punch in the gut. My game will likely not hit the threshold, but what if it does? Get punished for being successful is some BS.

I'm writing a book. Will decide once done with it.

Might try writing a mini engine and put it on github.

Note that "both" is also an option.

At work: we already use Unreal for most of our games, Unity was for web/mobile. Guess we just double down on Unreal.

Personal: Hurts more for personal projects where Unity was just easy for me. Godot maybe. I'm too old to learn a new engine :tear:

Mind you this whole ordeal is on a set of data Unity will pull out of their asses without the option to independently check and validate. If your name gets pulled out of the big hat, you get an invoice based on some arbitrary bullshit data. End of story. And tracking installs (spying on players) will be mandatory.

We should start to hold meetings in the style of AA meetings for ex-Unity developers. We can even get together and write a mildly serious engine.

@DragonCoder For me the issue is mostly the fact that this applies retroactively. The price change is greedy, and probably complicated to work with. But to apply this to games that were developed and released BEFORE such terms existed... That is one crazy bait and switch which is going to hurt a lot of people. Who knows what is next!

EDIt: To be clear I know they aren't charging for prior installs, only new installs... but people still built a business model with one set of terms, and then had them completely changed out from under them.
