Scripting Volume Textures for Data Viz

I'm trying to create a volumetric effect similar to the image below, but there doesn't seem to be much documentation on how to script a 3d texture in unity. Does anyone have any good references to start with? All the threads I've found are pretty old and the download links for the example are expired.
