Argh ... I'm still at a seminar in Switzerland until Nov 9th, so there's no way for me to be in Canada Nov 10th :-( ... well, hopefully next year it'll work out again (and hopefully, next year Unite will return to good ol' Europe, too ;-) ).

But hey - one guy's bad luck is another one's good luck. Congratulations mikesgames to that cool b-day present :)

@mikesgames: cool, I'm glad we could deliver on your birthday!

@jashan: bummer, but I'm glad to find a reply with that sort of positive attitude in that your bad luck is Mike's good luck.

    Hurray!

I'll make it for the first time since the first one in San Francisco ... and if anyone wants to drive up from the Toronto area Tuesday night let me know. I'm also looking for a roomie to split hotel costs. And I'll be able to show off my eight iOS game, the Unity-made, iPad only Move It, Soldier! which is into alpha testing now.

Are there a limited number of tickets for Unite and, if so, will you post when the event is nearing sell-out status?

I second that. I think I'm going, but I might not make the early bird. Can we get an indication on how many seats are left?

Yes, tickets are limited being as we can't ever rent event space of infinite size, so there must be a cap at some point. With that in mind we've booked a nice large space and there is *plenty* of room so make your decision and hopefully we'll see you there! :)

You can't rent an infinite space or you won't rent an infinite space?

Booked baby! See you all there.

Anyone using Air Miles, can use them at the Embassy Hotel. Which is next to the hotel that Unity has a deal with.

    Hey guys,

I managed to get a great deal on a hotel and I'm all ready for it! I'm really looking forward to this, too. I 'almost made it' the last two times, but both times something else cropped up. Not this time oh no!

Looking forward to meeting everyone (and seeing old friends!).

I'm really looking forward to Unite!
I live in Toronto and vacation occasionally in awesome Montreal.
I have a few tips/recommendations for people new to the city:

Most everyone is bilingual (je wish je was).
If you only speak English, you will be fine.
    Bonjour means Hello.

Le Valet d'Coeur - fantastic board game store
    http://www.levalet.com
Proof? They were the first to carry "Pitch Car"
    ~30 minute walk

"Les 3 Brasseurs" - a casual place to eat drink
    http://www.les3brasseurs.ca/eng/our_story.php
Not cheap but not expensive. Right inbetween.
Their beers are brewed fresh on site - you can buy a "metre" of beer.
Unless your group is large, you shouldn't need reservations.

    Au Pied de Cochon
    http://www.restaurantaupieddecochon.ca
High-end restaurant with absolutely amazing food.
    It's pricey and you'll need a reservation
Be warned, they're known for foie gras.
    ~45 minute walk.

Montreal Style Bagels - debatedly better than New York
If you find a place that takes pride in its bagel, order it.
    Ensure it's from a wood-fired oven.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal-style_bagel

Poutine - thick cut french fries covered in gravy and cheese curds
A cheap filling dinner - especially great if it's cold outside.
    I don't have a place to recommend.
    http://www.montrealpoutine.com/reviews.html

While I doubt there will be snow, it will be cold.
    You'll need a winter jacket.

Simon's - my wife buys me funky, reasonably priced shirts here
(I wish I could take credit for looking somewhat stylish these days).
Montreal styles tend to be less conservative than Toronto.
    http://www.simons.ca

Old Montreal - it feels like an old European city - worth walking around
Amazing art galleries/stores are everywhere, although it's a bit of a tourist trap.
Notre-Dame Basilica is Montreal's CN Tower.
    http://www.basiliquenddm.org/en/
It might be too cold to enjoy the "Old Port of Montreal"
    (during the summer it's amazing).

Eggspectations - while a franchise, it was founded in Montreal and retains some local flavour
    http://www.eggspectations.com/canada_eng/html/home.html
They use "real" maple syrup - which screams Canadian. Try the "Construction Pancake".
Very popular for brunch. No reservations required.
Note: In Montreal Quebec, I believe it's common to add syrup to everything including your eggs.

The adventurous should note that Montreal might be the strip club capital of Canada
    http://nightlife.wikia.com/wiki/Montreal

Mount Royal - a mountain in the middle of the city.
You probably won't even notice the mountain unless you look for it.
Thanks to strategically placed stairs, you can easily walk up it.
Amazing views, a giant cross, and not much else awaits you at the top.
While I believe you can, I wouldn't want to try this at night in the dark.
If you stay Saturday, and want some exercise, this is the ticket.
~2 hours to casually walk to the top
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Royal
    http://www.frommers.com/destinations/montreal/0018020036.html
    http://spacingmontreal.ca/2008/07/29/mount-royal-by-bike-at-night

    Bienvenue!

As a huge board gamer, and former resident of Cornwall during my ATC training days, I visited Montreal (and Ottawa) many a time, and agree that Le Valet d'Coeur is a great game store. They already have Worthington's Anzio/Cassino (which I also have now) and there are some real oddities there too. Recommended if you like boardgames (I'm up for a visit).

BTW, bigpants, how are you getting to YUL? If you need a ride from TO, let me know!

Quick suggestion... (even though I can not make it to Unite this year.)
If you are looking for a great experience and meal. Le Dragon Rouge.
    Medieval Pub/Restaurant excellent micro brews.
I hope they are still there on Cite des Jeune. I have not been back to Canada in 4 years but grew up in Ottawa and as they say. "For a fun time in Ottawa... go to Montreal!"
Oh ya also check out the Chinese district.

Have a great time... I'm just gonna cry now and get back to work.

Just got everything done: ticket, hotel, flights and the visa.

First time to Montreal and Canada.

I'm taking note of all your recommendations, bigpants SpinWing.

Hope to see you all there, thought I don't know anybody ;)

There are many, many great restaurants, bars, clubs, live music venues (jazz in Montreal is always good) down the the old part of the city and surroundings. It's a great place to hold Unite ... just a two weeks to drive day. Can't wait. Looking forward to seeing all the old timers from the first Unite in SFO.

Got my ticket since the day it was announced it would be in my hometown. Can't wait to be there to show off my iPhone game demo!

Unite is only a couple of blocks(10-15 min walk) from Ste-Catherine street which is considered as one the busiest street in downtown Montreal. It's nice to take a walk there. Rue St-Denis in plateau Mont-Royal is also a nice place to walk and see another part of downtown with very specialized boutiques and restaurants. Anyways, there's always the metro if you want to see the "Oratoire St-Joseph", the church on the mount Royal mountain bigpants was talking about. I also recommend you go to the olympic stadium and climb to the top of its tower. The view is magnificent.

As for the food, you could go to Swartz, the restaurant that serves the best smoked meat in the world! It's also not that far from downtown if you take the metro.

    Hi there!

You are getting me pretty worked up over all this Unity 3.1 and "important announcements" stuff. Is there any way to catch the Keynote by David in a Livestream/Webcast?

The time of the live keynote stream is quite early for my coders. It's implied on the last page of this thread, but I can't find it definitively said anywhere: Will the keynote be available for viewing after the live stream?

Settled into a nice modern top floor condo in old Montreal just waiting for the morning. And realizing I've forgotten to get my dev certificates put on this work laptop, grrr.
