Rotate sprites for 2D RTS like Age of Empires

    There is a set of 2D sprites on the store that I'm interested in, for making a game with a similar style to Age of Empires. They have the characters facing 8 different directions, which I feel should be enough, but looking closer at AoE I think maybe they used maybe 16. Anyone inspected that game enough to know, or have any tricks/advise for making characters appear 3D/smooth when walking in various directions (I'd like to use 2D though, not simply use 3D, for performance and quality)?

    I own AoE and was trying to figure out the answer myself, but it's pretty hard to tell even when comparing several screen captures:

    It's been a while since I played the game, if you watch it on you tube, 8 directions is right here as the movement is rigid.

    it's ok to get the assets but hopefully other assets will fit in with this one. I've made Gauntlet which is the same 8 way controller, it a lot of work, how far have you got with it.
