I've been working on this a little while and just put out the first video, figured it was a good time to tell people it existed.

UPDATE: Kickstarter page! All the good info is here:
    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tynansylvester/rimworld

At the most basic level, this is Dwarf Fortress in space. There are a lot of differences in the details.
-"Random" events like weather and attacks aren't random; they're created by a configurable AI storyteller along the same lines as the Left 4 Dead AI Director
    -Guns
-You can take people prisoner and recruit them. This is the main way you grow the colony
-Nobody is a professional settler; you're all crashlanding victims. So you get to build a colony with, like, an accountant, an airline pilot, and a housewife. I like to think this adds flavor
    -There's a shallow research tree
-Fire is just as brokenly unstoppable as in DF! (currently)

    Here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vV6wyeZ7458

    And the game's page: rimworldgame.com

Love to hear any thoughts or suggestions you have on it!

    Thanks everyone.

Ocid: I've worked really hard on UI and player training, actually. It gets better every build.

Sound. Only mentioned it as the main hinderance to Dwarf Fortress is the UI.

Grats on RPS coverage by the way.

    Dude this is quite impressive!
The only thing I dislike so far is the people because they look like the MSN people.

    But overall this looks incredible.
Like a mix between Prison Tycoon, Dwarf Fortress (obviously), but it's still so unique.

The question I have is, how do enemies arrive? Or are their actual enemies/factions other than survival itself?
And will there be animals of any sort? I know that may be difficult to incorporate but it could add another level of micromanagement.

    Thanks everyone.

Just a quick update, we'll be running a Kickstarter for RimWorld starting this week. If you're into it, there will be some early access options in the rewards.

Today I wrote code so raiders will burn your colony down if you try to wall them off.

I hope your Kickstarter will make it! The RockPaperShotgun article is great and all but the game needs more press coverage. The game looks superb. Will combat have a huge part in the game?

Yeah, combat's pretty darn important. It's the main threat. But not the whole game. It spices up the building aspects.

    Wow, this looks fantastic!
I've always wanted to play DF, but the interface is so daunting.

Any chance of doing more themes after you're done?
    Zombies?
    MadMax?
    Fantasy?

Hey Tynan, good game you have there. And as I can see, you already got founded on Kickstarter, so I wish you good luck with your project.

I'm trying to do something like you, about the energy thing, but I'm having some problems to how to control this things about providers and receivers.
Could you please give a look into my post, and maybe give me some insight ?

    Thank you.

Hey man. I just stopped by to say CONGRATULATIONS! I just saw your Kickstarter page and this looks like a definite go. Stoked for you. One word of caution though. A good friend of mine recently did a successfully funded Kickstarter campaign and while he did get paid, he didn't get nearly as much as his page showed. Apparently a lot of people's cards don't go through when they're charged, so the amount you get might be less than what it actually shows the public on your page.

I just thought it would be a good thing to know because he actually went and started spending money on upgrades etc. for his project and ended up having to come up with the money himself when he found out his payout was much less than he had anticipated.

His project wasn't nearly as successful though. He barely made more than his minimum amount and actually budgeted to the dollar what he needed so that's where most of the headache came from.

Either way. Congrats man! That's like dream come true status right there. I'll add a little to your awesome tally tomorrow when I get paid.

Pasty - Thanks! Yes I know, there is always some payment leakage. Apparently it's even worse when you're Canadian because CC companies sometimes think it's a fraudulent charge and block it. However, I'm not budgeted to the dollar, so I hope it'll be okay.

Love it, also exposing all of the definitions via XML so it can be modded - massive kudos.

I can't help but think I'd love to see this multiplayer eventually where you could setup alliances/trade routes with other player's colonies to trade for stuff you need or protection.

What type of AI do these type of games usually use? GOAP?
