RI.Hid Failed to Create Device File

I tried replugging in the controller and relaunching Unity, but the error persisted.

I ended up restarting my computer and the error went away.

 

In 2017.1, 2017.2, 2017.3, and 2018. No amount of rebooting prevents this error from occuring, and recurring. I've tried removing my bluetooth adapter but it had no effect. Only other USB peripheral besides keyboard and mouse is the Dell Visor HMD, but I kind of need that to develop Windows Mixed Reality. Recurring

"RI.Hid Failed to Create..."

I do not know if the behavior is related but with all 2017 and 2018 versions my editor freezes completely for a half second in half second intervals, indefinitely. The editor is unusable. 5.x and 4.x versions work fine but AFAIK don't support Windows Mixed Reality development.

I'm currently experiencing this error in Unity 2017.4.1f1.
I'm building on a brand-new, out of the box Dell system with Win10x64.
Building to UWP.
Fresh install of Unity.
Fresh install of UWP SDK, vcc, etc.
The monitor I'm using is an Acer touchscreen, model UT220HQL.
Otherwise there are *no devices attached*

EDIT: Turns out this was due to Win10 putting the machine to sleep before the build was finished.

 

I'm getting a similar error, but it says this:
<RI.Hid> Failed to create device file:
20 The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

 

I get still the same error "<RI.Hid> Failed to create device file:" after loading my scene file with the latest Unity version.

 

I get this：
<RI.Hid> Failed to create device file: 2 The system could not find the specified file.
When Joystick disconnected ("Controller (Xbox One For Windows)").

 

In Unity 5.6.6f2 (64-bit)

 

getting the same error in 2018.3

 

Just started getting this also in 2018.3.0f2 Win, if you remove a USB Wacom tablet it throws this error.

 

Honestly I've just accepted this as a benign (but annoying) error that Unity will never fix.

 

I have it in 2018.3.7f1. Like an old friend you have not seen for years...

 

2018.4 makes it pop up too.

 

Hey there, its 2019 and I'm receiving this error too before the app crash. On my log file the last thing before the crash is :

Code (CSharp):

The app is very simple, 2d games running on a windows 10 pc. But in my case, I'm using input touch from a touch screen

Thanks a lot buddy, I'm solved the error for me, unfortunately I forgot to turn off the driver of Scarlet SCP task monitor, but my controller is was not connected, and unity always call to Input function I think...

 

2020 and the bug is still not fixed

 

i have this error poping up few times per 24h even when idle

 

I've had players report this bug in a live shipped build and their controllers are NOT functioning. Built with Unity 2019.3.13f1 (64-bit)

Same, the error older than time itself - is on my screen.
I'm gonna just assume that it will never be fixed or we'll never know what exactly causes it.

Disconnect gamepad
Delete all Unity folders in "Registry Editor" (Start>Run>Regedit)
Logout or restart

 

I'm I have two projects open with 2020.3.3f1. I also have a Visual Studio 2019 Preview window, with two files called board and piece open. I only have one instance of them open, but both the open projects have scripts with the same name - is that what's causing the error?

 

It's nice to see this error has remained unaddressed by the devs since 2013...
Anyway, I'm also getting this error even though I'm experiencing no issues.

The only thing connected to my computer (bluetooth or usb) is a usb logitech mouse....

 

I have the same problem with an old Huion tablet! The driver is old. If I install another driver then the tablet does not work well. Yes, Unity needs to fix this or Windows O.S. I used the 2020.3.141f version.

I am not even using a controller. I am just using a mouse and keyboard

 

logitech mouse. Unity 2021.1.21f1

 

I would be interested to hear how many of these issues are with Tablet Users (e.g. Wacom)? I am seeing it as well. in 2021.3.0f1. I have not identified the trigger, but it eventually happens in every session.

 

It was happening with me as well , i had a laptop cooler plugged in , removing it fixed the issue for me.
So in my opinion try removing some USB devices and check which one is causing the issue.

I handle this issue for years now, and just searched to see if there is cleaner way to handle this. Seeing people struggling with the issue I will recommend to write your own system handling logs using:

Application.logMessageReceivedThreaded += MethodToHandleLog;

I show message to the players when they receive error only if the error passes my internal filters and allow players to send log file that is custom build to ensure important data is included.

I think this happens when some kind of a input device is plugged in. In my case, it was a drawing-pad.

 

For me it is definitely like that. I do have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and everytime the connection is flaky or shortly interrupted Unity shows the error above.

 

I still get this error on v 2022.1
I use a touch enabled laptop.

 

For me this stopped when I unplugged the usb from wacom cintiq pro16 which I use as secondary monitor

BTW, if you have this error without a controller plugged in, check you have no other things plugged in, ie in my case an ssd which it could not recognise

 

I am using unity version 2021.3.12. In my case I just restart the unity editor and problem solved

 

Wait until this happens in your builds and you cannot "restart the editor"

 

I instaled the new input system and the errors gone. Maybe you are using old input system and get the errors if you are using mobile

 

Did you use a touch enabled computer by any chance?
