I'm an artist and composer looking to try my hand at a simplistic Diablo 1-like prototype.

I'm currently scouring the web and these forums for 2d isometric stuff in Unity, and I figure someone here could help accelerate my search a bit.

Any tutorials, references, anything you can throw at me. My cursory searches (ongoing!) have yielded surprisingly little.

    Thanks in advance.

Do you want true 2d isometric or will you use 3d, angle the camera & use the orthographic setting?

It will be sprite-based, so true isometric.

From what I understand that makes it harder to code as the objects are in slightly different positions but I could be wrong. Have you looked at some of the editor extensions for 2d isometric sprites etc in the asset store? This is on my Wishlist for Xmas.

sry to say but unity is not the best fit

isometric 2.5 and similar were born for ppl unable to program in real 3 and without and math or framework to do it

once you have unity all the 3d stuff is covered there is no need to go to a weaker part of unity (2d) and a procedure only there to make it look like a fake 3d when you can have the real 3d easily

3d doesnt need to have AAA graphics you can do low poly and other modern stuff but on unity that ends up being much easy than 2d isometric

my suggestion is just do 3d isometric 3d third person

    I disagree,
there are more things to consider when it comes to 3d vs 2d.

    Your target platform is mobile?
Unless you want your end user's battery to drain away in a second you probably want to avoid extensive rendering, lighting, shadowcasting, etc.

You do in fact want to use AAA graphics?
Good luck finding proper 3d models at reasonable costs for indie developers.
Not to mention that you kick yourself out of the most promissing platform (mobile).

You want to achieve certain art styles (pixelart, tilt shift, etc.)?
    Have fun with shader programming...

Even low poly graphics do better when prerendered in my opinion. [Take a look]

I think isometric 2.5 is just counterintuitive in Unity since it started as a 3d engine and 2d was just added after the great success of the 2d Toolkit. You don't put some 3d objects in your scene and everything works out of the box. There's a little more effort when it comes to isometric games in Unity 2d.

If you take a look into the app stores and facebook you'll find the top apps to use an isometric 2.5 approach.
Clash of Clans, Boom beach, star wars: commander, Farmville (and its clones), ...
(even though most of them did not use Unity I guess)

yeah the point is using unity and for isometric 2.5 d you d have to build all the math and script yourself

its not hard, some time ago i did a full game in 2.5d and wrote it all from scratch its nothing huge but the again why use unity if it doesnt offer anything at all for the purpose?

but yeah you are right about mobile market, even though for a good isometric you probably need to spend much more for assets than for a low poly 3d

crap 2d graphics wont do any favor to your game
