Renaming shouldn't be an issue. Check your recycle/trash now in case it somehow got deleted.

Also, please consider using source control in order to guard and protect your hard-earned work.

Personally I use git because it is free and there are tons of tutorials out there to help you set it up.

Here's how I use git in one of my games, Jetpack Kurt:

Using fine-grained source control as you work to refine your engineering:

Also you can run git locally and it will be fine without connection, just remember to make backups.

Also I recommend to use a visual interface for git like sourcetree or tortoisegit

In the other hand for the scene try in the project searcher "t:scene" that will list all the scenes in the project.

In the other hand if you erase it by error at least if you are using windows you can look for the scene in the windows recycle bin and then restore it.

i set up my git and gitignore fine but i cant find where to change the metafiles to visible in the unity editor. i think this either might have somthing to do with the fact that i just updated unity or i didnt set git up right

You don't, but why would you do that at the first place?

Edit: oh you're referring to the
project settings / version control / mode
    ?

You always can use the search in the project settings (or the preferences) to find stuff.
