    What is VRSI?

    Traditional 2D Billboards or Standard Stereo Pair Images in Virtual reality cannot be effectively used as an Imposter to show a realistic representation. It either looks flat or suffers from the known stereo image pop-out effect as viewing distance changes. VRSI provides True 3D Stereo Billboards and look almost identical to the real object, even better most of the time. It is important to understand, VRSI is the only method to generate and display 3D Imposter Billboards in VR. Standard Side-By-Side stereo pair texture billboards cannot be used in VR due to locked image seperation, they will exhibit extreme Pop-Out when the viewer is far away and it will not fit in with any other existing object.

    VRSI solves all of these issues by taking advantage of a feature only available in Virtual Reality. VRSI allows for an ultra-realistic representation that can be used as a true 3D Imposter, use multiple or even thousands or millions of instances as there is almost zero performance impact! Please keep in mind the generated VRSI billboards are best seen inside VR as the user will see the complete depth parallax.

    What is included and how does VRSI work?

    VRSI is a Unity tool and there are no other dependencies, once a VRSI is created in VRSI Studio scene, multiple prefabs are created with the correct shaders attached ready to be used. The generated prefabs range from;
    • Unlit stationary (Manual placement for Rocks, houses, etc..)
    • Y-locked unlit (Camera facing corrected for VR)
    • Lighttable stationary
    • Y-locked Lighttable (Camera facing corrected for VR)
    Lighttable shaders wil will be Lit by all the lights in the scene including casting and receiving shadows.

    All the shaders have the option for Wind Animation toggle which can be used for most foliage. When MSAA is enabled, Alpha-to-coverage is also enabled on all the VRSI billboards for anti-aliased edges in VR. All shaders also include Color variation toggle to provide minor color changes, which is suitable for Trees and other foliage where they can all look different.

    We should have multiple executable Demos for both PC and Oculus via sidequest availble to test in the next day or so. VRSI is best apprecitated inside VR as it is impossible to portray the effectiveness just from a video. Without VRSI, Normaly, it is not possible to do Stereoscopic 3D billboards as it will be unusable due to The Pop-Out Effect, so when the camera is further away the paralax continues to get bigger and bigger and looks very strange and weird adn out of place. VRSI solves this issue and automates everything.

    I appreciate the effort gone into make the video's but they don't tell me anything of value. The camera doesn't even move. Pretty sure people will need to see an VR enabled EXE / APK to experience if this works or not.

    Looking forward to that.

    Yes VRSI is unique and VR only and it's hard to portray how good it is just from a video, you really need to see it in VR, were just about to upload the executable demo soon so everyone can experience it them selves. In VR, they look indistinguable from the real 3D mesh at any distance! Actually that scene in the video is impossible to run the oculus quest without VRSI, even 2nd gen Quest.

    Huge congratulations, that’s very impressive. From a static position or teleporting around, the effect is quite realistic, even close up. I found it quite difficult to even tell what’s real mesh vs what a VRSI. Seriously, well done. This is very impressive.

    Minor side note, I think there’s something funky with the mapping of your controllers for Quest over Oculus Link. I had to point with one hand and click with the other to select items on the menu. Also tested it with SteamVR and a Pico Neo 3headset. No issues there.

    Thank you! we strongly like to invite everyone to try the VRSI PC Demo! and see the potential of VRSI in VR. The Controller mapping is a bug of the VR interaction framework we were using, we will fix this soon. VRSI is already being used in multiple upcoming VR titles which we will post videos of. Here is another VRSI of wall covering Vines, the original 3d mesh is over 3.4 million polygons, VRSI version 1 polygon! and looks identical in VR

    can you really not use the demo at all without VR hardware? I cannot even confirm the first dialog box on Win 10 Pc.

    Can you please advise me on an issue I’m having. When I generate a VRSI and drag it’s prefab into a new scene, the objects floats way off the round as the added transform points are way below the VRSI generated. . If I attempt to drag the VRSI down to ground level, the shadows get cut off.

    Update:
    It seems the issue is related to having VR enabled and a VR headset connected. If a VR headset is connected to the PC the FOV of the camera in the VRSI Creator scene is changed from 60 to 97.48452 automatically when I press Play. This change seems to be the root cause of the VRSI to generate incorrectly.

    If I go into the XR Plug-in Management and disabled VR support, I can now generate VRSI’s correctly without any issues. Once done generating my VRSI’s, I can then enable VR support again and view the VRSI’s I generated.

    Simply put, the solution for me right now is to turn simply turn off VR support while generating the VRSI’s and then turn it back on when I’m done.

    1) Added two new demos


    ** MultiView_VRSI_Demo_Experimental **


    This is a basic demo of Upcoming feature called Multi-View VRSI or MV-VRSI. The demo shows a Teddy bear with 16 VRSI packed into a single Texture Array. This allows

    the VRSI to have multiple view points, you can essentially walk around it. We will include a new Tool in the next release of VRSI to make it simple to create Multi-View VRSI's.



    ** VRSI_LOD_Demo **


    This demo show how you can easly replace the traditional billboards in LOD groups with VRSI alternative!. There are over 7000 Trees in the scene, that are GPU instanced.


    2) Clean-up of VRSI Shaders and new Specular VRSI shaders added.


    3) Two new VRSI's have been added to the VRSI_Examples


    Teddy


    PineTree (The original 3D version has over 700K triangles)


    4) Added vrsiCamFacing_MSAA_DIRECTIONAL_BARE shader


    This shader had no Wind or Color Variation support, so it's bare minimum. More Variants of Bare shaders will be released in the next update

    Great, re native Quest app coming!
    Will it be available for download before the price goes up?
    i see price is now $84. and going up to $120 tomorrow. not sure what time it goes up. I'm in Canada. EST time.

    I'd really like to see this on my Quest before i buy VRSI.

    If the demo won't be ready today, would you please consider extending the 'new release' price period by a few days?

    Thank you! URP support will be coming very soon. The next update V1.2 will be available today and it includes 2 important requested features, Multi-View VRSI's and PC/Mobile support so VRSI can be used for Non-VR applications!

    VRSI is perfect for this! inside VR all distant mountains will look 3D and indistinguishable from the real mesh.
