EDIT : Apologies for our previous reply. We made a mistake and linked the limitations from our other reflections tool instead.

The update for this tool to improve support for Unity 2019 + LWRP will become available NEXT week since the upcoming update will mark version 2.8, a huge UI update and many new improvements as we approach the release of version 3 (~September).

However, and again, the limitations are similar. Post Process Stack v2 will be fully supported without errors after the update, but it makes the reflections more expensive to compute. The reflections are not compatible with Motion Vector based effects, as these are not correctly rendered on the reflection itself.

Besides some limits on the preview mode (Scene View) and lack of support for multiple cameras and the static background + dynamic objects mix shader, PIDI Planar Reflections on LWRP is basically the same asset and has the same features and support.

We recommend that, if you can wait for the update (its release will be announced here) you wait for it as it will be more sure that all the features you need have been thoroughly tested for 2019.1 and 2019.2

Again, apologies for our previous information, we hope this helps!

Here you can see a small screenshot of the asset working on LWRP (2019.1, 5.7.x) and with the reflection rendering the Post Process Effects independently from the main camera.

Effects dependant on screen space (Vignette) as well as some antialiasing methods and other effects dependant on motion vector may not be rendered accurately.

    A small update :

The patch to improve Unity 2019 compatibility will be delayed for causes out of our control. The Asset Store approval team will be on vacations from August 15 to August 23, which will delay all updates and new releases.

However, this will give us enough time to prepare a better release of what will be version 2.8 of PIDI Planar Reflections, and to create some necessary bridges as we prepare for version 3 of this asset which will include a highly improved LWRP port, easier ways to create custom shaders for it, a better UI and documentation and native support for the Post Process stack 2.0.

We hope this helps and apologize for these delays on our updates pipeline, we will try our best to have the updates ready and available as soon as possible once the curation team of the Asset Store is back at a normal schedule :)

    Have a great day!

Our latest and biggest update for PIDI Planar Reflections 2 is coming in the next days. It will include better support for LWRP 5.7 and 6.9 (Unity 2019.1-2019.2), a highly improved UI, online documentation as well as several general improvements across the board.

Furthermore, every person who has bought a copy of PIDI Planar Reflections 2 from August 1st onwards will receive the upgrade to PIDI Planar Reflections 3 : Standard Edition free of charge (of course including everyone who buys it in the upcoming weeks until the release of version 3 around September) so right now is a perfect time to start adding some reflections to your projects :)

Everyone who bought the asset before August 1st will receive a considerable discount (~50%) if they decide to upgrade to version 3 once it is released.

All the upcoming features and workflow of PIDI Planar Reflection 3, including its native support for Post Process Stack v2, highly improved LWRP support, ShaderGraph and Amplify Shader Editor Shaders, dedicated Water Shaders, improved mobile compatibility, improved performance, easy workflow to add reflections in seconds and much more will be announced very soon as well :)

    Have a great weekend!

This is an important notice :

Version 2.9 of PIDI Planar Reflections is coming very soon but it will NOT have support for the upcoming Universal RP nor many of the new features of 2019.2-2019.3

Support for the new Universal RP is being considered for PIDI Planar Reflections 3, so if you plan to use it you will need to upgrade once version 3 of this asset is released.

This is just a small reminder that every purchase of PIDI Planar Reflections 2 made after August 1 will grant you a free upgrade to PIDI Planar Reflections 3 which will be available very soon.

In the upcoming days we will cover the main differences and improvements over version 2 as well as how the new workflow we've designed for our reflections system produces much more stable, efficient and flexible results.

    upload_2019-9-2_0-58-59.png

We look forward to showing you all the improvements in the upcoming weeks :)

    Have a great day!

PIDI Planar Reflections 3 is coming very soon with the following improvements being just some of the things you can expect :)

    • A brand new Renderer + Casters system that allows you to render different reflections to different meshes even if they share the same material as well as to cast a single reflection to multiple materials with ease and no additional performance costs
    • Smarter visibility checks that prevent framerate drops and hiccups when reflections become visible
    • Integrated support for Post Process Stack 2.0 either copying settings from the main camera or with per-reflection settings
    • Improved Water shader (foam + refraction + reflection + depth) for the Standard Pipeline and the LWRP Pipeline*
    • Improved UI and documentation
    • *In development compatibility with the Universal RP in 2019.3+

    upload_2019-9-12_20-20-3.png

    upload_2019-9-12_20-20-30.png

*The LWRP version of the water shader is right now in an experimental phase and will be limited in features compared to the Standard Pipeline one due to limits in the LWRP pipeline. Furthermore, the water shaders will only be pre-included in the Standard and Team Editions of PIDI Planar Reflections 3, and they will be a separate add on for the Lite Edition

This is also a reminder that everyone buying PIDI Planar Reflections 2 after August 1 will receive a free upgrade to the Standard Edition of PIDI Planar Reflections 3. Copies bought before August 1 will get a considerable discount :)

We hope this will help and be some nice piece of news for all of you!

Just a quick glimpse to our brand new Water shader for LWRP to be included with version 3 of PIDI Planar Reflections :

    upload_2019-9-17_0-13-6.png

    upload_2019-9-17_0-13-37.png

The shader (which will be released in Beta due to the limits in LWRP) has support for :

    • Reflections
    • Refraction
    • Basic Depth testing
    • Basic shore foam
PIDI Planar Reflections 3 : Standard Edition will be sent to the store for approval around this weekend and should be available very early in October, so we recommend you to purchase your copy of PIDI Planar Reflections 2 while you still can to earn the right to a free upgrade once PIDI Planar Reflections 3 is released :)

Any copy of PIDI Planar Reflections 2 bought before August 1 will NOT receive a free upgrade but will, however, receive a considerable discount when upgrading to version 3.

We hope this will be very helpful and that you have an excellent week! :)

    Hi there,

As expressed in the Asset Store page and in this forum, this asset (and the upcoming version 3.0) is not compatible with any VR / AR devices.

    Thanks for commenting !

Version 3.0 of PIDI Planar Reflections has been sent to the store for approval. However, we have gotten news that there are technical issues on the Asset Store side so the approval and release of version 3.0 might be delayed.

However, we can cover some basics about this release :)

PIDI Planar Reflections 3 will be available in three different editions to try to cover all budgets and team sizes :

    • Standard Edition, with all the features and including a collection of advanced water shaders for the Standard Pipeline, LWRP and Universal RP as well as support for LWRP, Universal RP and Post Process FX.
    • Team Edition, with the same features as the Standard Edition but without the per-seat license, allowing you to use a single license across large teams
    • Lite Edition, with all the core features and additional modules (sold separately) to add the Water Shaders and LWRP / Universal RP functionality.
The Standard Edition will keep the regular price of 35 USD while the Lite edition will be available for only 15 USD. Every purchase of PIDI Planar Reflections 2 (the current version available on the store) made after August 1st 2019 will receive a free upgrade to the Standard Edition of version 3 as soon as it releases.

Users who bought it before August 1st will receive a 15 USD discount when upgrading while owners of version 1.0 of this tool will receive a 5 USD discount.

As a small, tiny tease of what you can expect with version 3.0 here we have a video of the Standard Edition with one of the Water Shaders running on the Unity 2019.3 beta with the Universal RP (features on this pipeline are subject to change since it is still part of a beta release)

    Have a great day !

Will version 3 support reflection sharing across multiple meshes with height fade?

I am trying it with version 2 but its fade is weird and doesnt seem to be based on the height..

    Hi there,

Version 3 does not have (in the initial release) a pre-made depth fade shader. It will come in the first update within the first days after it is released (right now it is in the middle of the approval process so we expect it to be ready within the next 10-15 days).

The reflection system uses a simple depth based value that measures the distance from the reflective surface, it is not a true height based fade effect since the shader is meant to be used in surfaces placed in any direction, not only floors.

However, it should produce results similar to those shown in the included demos :)

    upload_2019-9-27_22-7-23.png

    upload_2019-9-27_22-7-45.png

    upload_2019-9-27_22-8-2.png

Version 3 is entirely built across sharing reflections and all passes, both depth and reflection pass to multiple meshes, yes.

We invite you to please contact us to our support email with your invoice number, screenshots from all the setup you have in your scene and with the component as well as, if possible, a scene that clearly reproduces the behavior you are seeing. We do not work on weekends but we will look into this issue on Monday to try to give you a fast solution.

    Have a great weekend !

EDIT : Added a few screenshots showing the intended behavior of the Depth Fade shader.

Edit 2 : A small guide will be uploaded before the release about how to upgrade v2 shaders to be compatible with v3 (since the change will be limited to basically adding 1 line of code) for those of you who prefer to keep using the older shaders. Version 3 will get newer shaders frequently (more optimized and with more features) but most v2 shaders will run without issues after applying the changes from the guide we'll upload next week :)

    Have a great weekend!

Hi. Humm.. I am looking at the images you have posted, but it still doesn't seem like it is fading away properly. How can I describe this.. the fade doesn't look smooth enough?. The first image looks like it is doing some fading, but not smooth and it starts fading after "some" distance? And the last image just looks like the reflection is cut short and dimmer over all? Sorry, but I was looking for more smooth fade as the reflected pixel gets further from the reflection surface.

I was also wondering, since the system has layer mask for selecting which layer it gets to be rendered, I am assuming that the reflection rendering camera is using forward rendering path? SInce deferred rendering path has limited layer masking capabilities?

    Hi again,

We invite you to read the documentation of the asset thoroughly, as these questions are answered in more detail in the documentation. In short, depending on the actual settings of your reflection, you may be rendering it on deferred or forward with the inherent limitations of each pipeline either on the amount of lights or layer masking / shadowing / custom shaders limitations.

Regarding the depth effects and the included shaders, the shaders included with this asset are provided as a startup framework and / or demonstration samples of the effects you can achieve. Included in the documentation is a handy guide on how to create your own shaders compatible with the system, if you need more complex or specific results :)

    We hope this helps !

    Hi there!

At the moment, Planar Reflections 3 is stuck on approval (we have confirmed it got through to the approval queue but due to technical issues on the asset store side of things it has delayed it) but we can confirm that it will fully support the universal srp pipeline, even at release.

However, until Unity 2019.3 is out of beta the support for universal srp must be taken as "beta" too and unofficially supported, since we are not sure Unity won't make more changes to it.

    In short :
    - Yes, it will support both LWRP and Universal SRP from release (tested on Unity 2019.3 beta)
    - Some bugs may appear on Universal SRP before it's marked as stable but we can't do much to prevent this.
    - We plan to make most if not all of our tools compatible with Universal SRP in the upcoming months, starting with the current releases (2D reflections 2, Planar Reflections 3 and the upcoming advanced skin shader 2) and any future releases in 2020

    We hope this helps!

Version 3 of PIDI Planar Reflections will be available early next week, and here is what you need to know about this release :

    • PIDI Planar Reflections 3 will NOT have support for any VR nor AR devices.
    • LWRP, Universal RP and mobile devices are fully supported
    • PIDI Planar Reflections 3 has at release less shaders than version 2 due to some shaders from version 2 being merged into more flexible ones for version 3.
    • Version 3 comes with LWRP and Universal RP ready water shaders
    • Reflections have become more efficient in version 3 and due to multiple changes in how we handle them internally they have also become more predictable in their behavior (less glitches, clearer settings)
    • Post Process Stack v2 and v3 (integrated in Universal RP) are fully supported by design, with just a single toggle.
    • Workflow has been changed to a reflectors and casters system that is similar to the old reflector object system. This allows you to render a single reflection and then cast it to multiple materials at once as well as for a single material applied to different objects to receive different reflections, which allows for a more flexible and efficient level design.
    • Scene preview of the reflections is more useful and can be turned on and off in all pipelines
    • As a major release, there is no automatic way to upgrade materials and scenes from v2 to v3, due to the very different way reflections are handled. However, it should not take more than a couple of minutes thanks to the new and much easier workflow. At release, we will make available several tutorials on how to upgrade scenes and materials on our online documentation to show how painless and easy this process is :)
PIDI Planar Reflections 3 will be available in 3 different editions at release :

    • Lite Edition with a per-seat license, which includes all the basic functionality of the tool minus PostFX support, depth effects, LWRP / URP support and water shaders.
    • Standard Edition with a per-seat license, which contains all the features of the asset.
    • Team Edition, the same features as the standard edition but without any per-seat terms.

The full list of differences between Lite and Standard editions is in the table below :

    upload_2019-10-4_9-32-25.png

Some additional notes about the upgrade prices and differences between editions :

    • The Lite edition has a launch price of 15 USD, the Standard edition keeps its current 35 USD price.
    • Users of version 2.x who purchased the asset after August 1st will receive the upgrade to version 3.x Standard for free.
    • Everyone else who bought version 2.x before August 1st will be able to upgrade with a 40% discount, meaning the upgrade will cost them only 20 USD, the same price to upgrade from Lite to Standard.
    • Two add ons for the Lite Edition will be available as well, one adding LWRP / Universal RP support and the other one including all the water shaders for all pipelines for a price of 15 USD and 7.50 USD respectively. These addons do not have any per-seat restrictions

What is planned for the asset after release ?
    • More complex shaders for the reflections and better depth effects support.
    • An improved and larger collection of mobile shaders
    • Gameplay related functions to, for example. detect if objects are being reflected or not
    • Improvements to the water shader in all platforms
    • Improved static+dynamic reflection shaders with distance + depth blending
    • And of course, any other improvements and new features that comes from users feedback :)

We hope this release will be very helpful to all of you, and to offer you a small peak about what to expect once the asset goes live next week we leave here the release trailer :

Remember that any copy of version 2 purchased on August 1st 2019 or afterwards will grant you a free upgrade to the Standard Edition of version 3, including any copy bought during this weekend before the release of version 3.

    Have a great weekend!

    Hi there,

Some form of the "cartoon/sprite" like reflective surface (at least for the usage we intended it) can be achieved already with version 2 through the unlit cutout shaders but we'll extend this on version 3, maybe even with additional cartoon like shaders (full cartoon lighting). Making custom shaders for version 3 became much easier thanks to the new workflow so we expect to add several new shaders free of charge every 4-8 weeks besides all other patches and updates :)

About the upgrade, unfortunately if you bought on spring then you only apply for the ~40% off, so your price would be 20 USD instead of the usual 35.

We hope this helps and that you have a great weekend! :)

    Hi there,

Unfortunately no. As soon as version 3 is out version 2 will no longer receive any updates, patches, support nor new features. Version 2 already does not support unity 2019.3 officially, nor will receive any updates for it.

If you need support for newer unity versions or any other form of support after the release of version 3 next week you'll need to upgrade, since the support we offer for any of our tools is limited to the lifetime of the version cycle of the license you paid for (1.x, 2.x, etc)

Giving support to our tools has a cost due to the amount of time it takes, especially now that unity is rapidly changing. Limiting the free and fast support we provide to our users to just one major release at a time is what allows us to keep our tools evolving and improving over the years.

    We hope this helps!

This is just a quick update. The Asset Store is still having some delays in their approval times and as such, it is unsure whether we will be able to release version 3 on time for this week. We are currently in touch with the Asset Store team trying to get more information and verifying everything is in order and in queue for an approval as soon as possible.

We thank you for your understanding, as this is an issue completely outside of our control.

    Have a great day!

OK , that's unfortunate to hear.

Would you consider an upgrade price for those of us that have supported your work, on earlier versions of the tool? Like $5 to upgrade from ver 2 ~> ver 3 ~> ver 4 etc

    I pretty broke atm.

    thanks~

Hi there, sorry for the late reply, we do not receive updates on edited posts so I didn't see the last question you added later to your comment.

All our assets offer a discount for returning customers, usually between 30 and 50% off the normal price. In this case, the upgrade fee from version 2 to version 3 is 20 USD which represents a ~45% discount which is the same upgrade discount we had for going from version 1 to version 2.

Users upgrading from version 1 directly (users that skipped version 2 altogether) also receive a discount, this time a ~15% off.

The reason for charging an upgrade fee is that we will keep giving free support to all our users as well as very regular updates with new features and shaders through the whole year, thus having the upgrade be free or charging a very low fee for it would not cover the real expenses of developing, maintaining and properly supporting all our tools.

Answering user questions, giving them assistance on some of the needs of their projects, giving technical support for users working with brand new Unity features or with more complex devices takes sometimes dozens of working hours from our week. Keeping this support service efficient, with a very short response time and tailored to the needs of each customer has always been a priority to us but it is not free due to the high amount of work and time it takes from all our other projects and from actual development for our tools.

Charging ~50% of the asset's price to returning customers is in our opinion a fair price that we charge both for the brand new features of the tool, since the users are acquiring a better asset than the one they had, as well as for their access to our support services for the full lifecycle of the new version.

We hope this helps, and that you have a great day!

PIDI Planar Reflections 3 is now available (you can see its dedicated thread here), and with this we consider PIDI Planar Reflections 2 officially deprecated and its lifecycle finished. We hope the new version will be a great help to all of your projects and can't wait to see the amazing things you can do with it :)

    Have a great day!

    Hi,

just bought PIDI Planar Reflections but I think we are facing a bug.
I closed Unity, reopened it, opened a new scene and added a PIDI Reflections Renderer.
The moment I drop the Renderer into the scene, the FPS drop from 200 to 5 and stay like that.
Profiler shows 98% CPU at PlanarReflectionRenderer.OnDrawGizmos().

    Unity 2018.1.1

    Best,
    Daniel

    Hi there,

Just by testing we could not reproduce this bug in any way nor Unity version we tried. We believe it might have to do with the way you drop the Renderer to the scene. Please contact us to our support email with your Invoice number, a gif or video showing the whole process you are following to drop the renderer to the scene and details about if you are doing it at play time (which is not usually recommended), in edit mode, the performance you get in the demo scenes, the exact configuration you have on the Reflections Renderer settings, the way the scene is set up and any other additional information you believe may be useful. We also recommend testing in an empty project and to re-install the asset completely as there may have been some errors while importing.

Please also make sure to not change the names nor locations of the asset folders and to import every asset included with the package. Please also check that the asset "Planar3Logo_Gizmos" was generated inside your Gizmos folder.

We hope this helps, we will be waiting for your email and this additional information in order to provide more assistance.

What are the core differences between v2 and v3?

I remember V2 used a separate camera to compute the reflections, is it possible to add filters to that camera?.

I had an issue with multiple surfaces and I think I finally found why but by the time I found the possible cause I had alread removed PIDI from game and I was too busy to re-integrate

    Hi there,

While custom filters can be added to the reflections since version 2 and it has been greatly improved in version 3, it still causes a considerable performance impact and since the reflections are not projected in full screen space some effects may not work as expected (such as vignetting for example).

However, if you limit yourself to the effects included in the Post Process Stack 2 for example, you will find that version 3 of PIDI Planar Reflections is much more flexible and allows complete control over how PostFX interact with the reflection and allows you to even assign custom volumes to the reflections.

The workflow for multiple surfaces has also been greatly simplified as has been the memory usage and garbage collection calls, on top of being compatible with Universal RP and LWRP, as well as soon (mid-late February) a first beta release for HDRP. There are many internal and external differences and improvements made for version 3 to just make a list of them, but you can read more about the full set of features in the official online documentation or if you prefer here on its thread to compare with what you had on version 2.

We hope this helps to see more about the differences :)

Ok thanks! just one thing more, does this work with the legacy render pipeline/built in pipeline?

    Hi again,

We recommend you to read the documentation carefully before your purchase to ensure this asset will be a good fit for your needs but yes, every feature described above (control and integrated support for Post process stack v2) is available in Standard (built-in), LWRP and Universal RP (in Universal we use the integrated Post Process stack v3 instead)

    We hope this helps :)
