    What is Magnetic Particles?
Magnetic Particles is a tool that will allow you to use a transform to attract and repel Shuriken system particles in Unity. On top of simply attracting and repelling particles to reference transforms, particle behaviour can also be modified using a magnetic effect modifier. Magnetic effect types are; position, direction, bounded position, bounded direction, positional noise and directional noise.

By combining magnet types (attract/ repel), magnet effect modifiers and varying the number of magnets that affect given particle system, you are able to create some very unique particle behaviours that otherwise would not be possible. Some unique combinations are listed below (also shown in the video above) so you can get an idea of what can be achieved.

    Potential Use Cases?

    Bubble Shield

In the image above you can see three magnet gizmos. These gizmos represent each 'magnet' that is influencing the particle system (represented by the shuriken logo). The two red magnets are attracting the particles, while the blue is repelling them. The blue circle represents the bounded area of the repelling magnet (this means that the particles are only affected by this magnet within this range, causing a bubble type barrier.

    Asteroid

In the image above and included in the web demo you will be able to find a demonstration system that results in the effect of an asteroid trail. This system is achieved by using a single particle emitter (represented by the Shuriken Particle System icon), a repulsing magnet (represented in blue) with a range roughly of the blue circle surrounding it, and two attracting magnets at different points in the asteroid ‘trail’. Particle lifetime and all other colour properties are managed by the particle system as usually would be the case.

    Noise Visualisation

In the image above one magnet transform is used with a repulse effect and a directional noise modifier, resulting in sporadic particle movement over the particle lifetime. Using the trail renderer and colour over lifetime settings included in the Shuriken Particle System results in an interesting musical visualiser style system.

    How does it work?
In the image below you will be able to see how the script is laid out. This script will be attached to the particle system that you wish to influence magnetically. Here users can define how many magnets they would like to influence the given system. By increasing the size number, additional magnets will be added.

Under the magnets drop down each magnets properties will be represented. The magnet type simply determines whether the magnet attracts or repels the particles, effect type determines the magnetic effect modifier, the transform is simply the reference transform used to determine the magnets location, the scale is how much magnetism the system uses, the distance is how far the bounded magnets range reaches (0 = infinite), visualize turns on/ off the bounded mesh visualisation and enabled toggle allows you to turn of a particular magnet in the system for debugging purposes.

First-time users can read through the documentation here for a more in-depth guide.

Magnetic Particles is now 50% off until the 5th of January 2021

We will be revisiting and updating this package in the coming months. This update will include new demo scenes, a few new particle modifiers, and a general tidy up of the package to ensure it is future-proofed as new Unity versions drop throughout 2021.

If there are any particular features you would like to see, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

    Best,
