Recording the motion of the Vive Mini Tracker

I am working in a lab that wishes to record the walking trajectory of children while they are engaged in a task. If they are walking towards something and are distracted they might be pulled towards the distractor and we wish to measure how much they deviate towards that distractor.

We are hoping to use the HTC Vive, its mini tracker and their link to Unity to do this. So we aren't actually using any VR, or the headsets. The Vive and Unity just provide us with a simple motion tracking and recording solution. We are very open to suggestions for other methods though.

I have worked on VR projects before but I have never had track and record the position of any real-world object and was wondering if anyone could offer any advice or links to scripts or tools that might simplify my workflow. Unfortunately, it's the 3D side that I am most familiar with and not the coding side.
