Due to the recent news of Gigaya cancelled, internal firings, and a shift in direction of Unity and other problems, i dont know about you and your projects, but sometimes bad news motivates us for the good. Instead of porting my project to another engine, ive decided to test port my project, Isle Of Carnage to HDRP, and show what Unity is capable of!.

We can all give into this BS, or turn it into something great. I for one will take this challenge. Ive used in-house engines, Unity and UE, and ill be damned if ill allow Unitys internal actions dictate my project. I love Unity, and im not going anywhere. Unity can change whatever they want, but you cant change the version im using, the assets, or my drive. Do i want Unity to fail?, hell no. Do i agree with the direction they are taking?, hell no.

Thank you Gigaya team, and wish you the best (love the controller). At least at some point Unity now feels our pain. Do what you want, but so will i...

That's a good attitude. The "recent events" are mostly noise, and even if unity were actually heading towards certain doom, it would remain usable for at least a decade.

Those sort of products do not die easily.

I agree with this for the time being. Even though Unity Technologies (The company) may have "shifted direction", there is still no news at all about how (or even if) the Unity Engine will be affected by this merger. I'm going to wait until the building is actually on fire before I jump out the window.

It's reasonable to be vigilant, but the doom-and-gloom hasn't happened yet, and may not happen.

I am disappointed about Gigaya, though.

I'm glad they cancelled Gigaya, because I reckon it to be just a more sophisticated version of Unity Open Project 1 and they could focus on a much better project now. They had better make an online massive multiplayer game or something similar to Nanite/ Lumen

100% agree. I've been using Unity for too long and I feel super comfortable with it. Even though I tried others, I just couldn't adjust myself to their workflow. Features like Nanite/Lumen are nice to have, but they aren't a must to make a good game (They might make the progress easier tho).

In the end, I just want Unity to be a software that is reliable.

It puts bacon on the table daily for me. I don't make games for a living .It is a PITA sometimes but we alway manage to get over each hurdle, proceed and get a weekly paycheque and a pat on the back for good progress from the paymasters. The number of external systems we are talking to and the low level we are playing at sometimes does not reflect the battlecry of the stumped that Unity is atrocious and needs to be dog-fooded.

you are developing your game in a certain version of unity and when you started you expected to finish the game in the same version, right?

so what's changed? I mean maybe you dont like an ad/malware company but unity was already and ad's company. So what's the difference as far as making your game goes?

I for one was looking forward to Gigaya, and what it could have taught/shown us. And no, nothing has changed, but i was thinking of porting it to another engine (like others are), but instead i choose to stay, be positive, make good out of the bad, make it better.

Your point is taken, and i agree but i dont see the recent events being positive/productive in any way shape or form, so i chose to ignore them and move on.

Long term support especially on consoles and mobile, for one.

Only on standalone platforms. One of the major things I learned working on the consoles is that you're constantly moving to a newer release because of the mandatory updates to the SDKs which are tied to specific releases. It's can be a real headache if you're working with SRPs (which I was) because they get upgraded too breaking things.

Yes. They are surely going to do a much larger better project and release it. I wouldn't hold your breath though, or you will surely die of suffocation because that is never going to happen.

This is often platform dependent. For long projects on certain platforms you're going to have to plan in an upgrade or two, due to limited compatibility windows and such.

But yes, nominally you wouldn't start a project unless you were confident that everything you needed to finish it either already exists, or can be comfortably created by you.
